It's just another way that the CDL schools are putting the screws to the student to maximize their profits. Instead of teaching each new driver all they can about transmissions they select to use the autos so they can rush the class through. You would think with all the money paid they would have the decency to teach. I can understand if the school is putting these students through their own school and their truck have autos. That makes a little sense but I believe you'll find the open schools are using them for their advantage and not for the payee.
You new drivers out there should write this down and watch out for it. When shopping for a school make sure they teach most transmissions and you drive a standard. If not you'll find yourself very limited in the job market when you need to have no limitations at all. You can get down to two selectees and the company will pick the driver that knows both the auto and standard over a driver that only knows autos. Besides that, there's not many companies that run all autos compared to the standard. Just my 2¢

from what I see in my area, most of the schools are only running manuals

School I attended was all manuals. Had a chance to get up in a few different trucks during classroom time.

Ghost Ryder Thanks this.

Ok I stand CORRECTED. My information about schools come from drivers that attended schools since I never had to go to one. The one that stands out the most was the instructors skipping all they could about shifting so the students could pass the test. It was very clear that this school was teaching for the CDL and not driving. This is one of the reasons that I feel the schools should be monitored by a higher authority and the subject matter should be mandated.
Snowshoes Thanks this. -
There is scientific research proving there is a direct link between wanting to drive and autoshift, and having a pu55y. Just saying....

gashauler you are right about most schools don't care.....

I drove an ultra shift 10 speed for awhile. It was nice. It was really great in city traffic. The only draw back I could say would be in backing. It wasn't as smooth as my manual 10 speed. I had to press the accelerator to make it go backwards. That's about the only thing that I could say I didn't like.
The auto's are gaining popularity because the younger crowd are not as familiar with the manuals as us older group. I know there are exceptions to this rule but as a whole. -

I don't think veterans with transport experience should have to be treated like CDL mill wannabes or spend 6 weeks with a trainer if a carrier with autshift will hire them and accept their military experienceSnowshoes, biggare1980 and neqoda Thank this.
