I just feel like with so many rules it is so easy to make an unintentional minor mistake that is blown out of proportion which can be used as an excuse to get fired. I try to be the perfect driver but it is so easy to screw up once. As humans it is impossible to be perfect, and other jobs people mess up all of the time but in trucking if you mess up that could be your job. I am not talking about justifiable things like running into something or driving dangerously, but just something minor that DOT or your fm may not like. I do not feel secure even though I love the job.
Any company drivers feel confident about their trucking future with their company?

I work for a small company (20-25 trucks) and have no fear of losing my job due to a minor mistake. I started with a large carrier for 6 months and could never go back to being just a number.

No such thing as a perfect driver.I don't feel secure in my job.Even though I like the company, ppl are great to work with,I have gotton warnings and never know when the next one will be.In trucking there is no such thing as innocent till proven quilty. It's not just things what happens with you and the DOT but the company as well.Is their actually companies that have this thing called open door policy?

Still to date I haven't seen a single company that offers as much as the company I work for. I talk to all of the people from my truck school, company orientation, and other truckers who work for other companies and they make barely any money and have a lot of stupid rules. One guy said he can only fuel up in certain states even though he is OTR and he has to avoid tolls, weigh each load even if it is light, can't use cellphone, makes .35 per mile, uses old rusty trailers that have tons of problems that company won't fix, etc. Another friend is local with an old million mile truck that is falling apart, and he can only work third shift.

Exactly. You could have perfect logs, doing the speed limit all day, maintaining proper distance, perfect weight distribution on axles, but then a marker light could go out after your pretrip and then you have safety points and a ticket. This didn't happen to me, only using an example. I don't mind if I just had to pay ticket, but I am worried about the safety points. I may save up more money to provide me with two years of living expenses so in case I get fired I can go to school to be an xray technician. Only a two year program at a cheap tech school and you can make $50k per year staring at xrays.mje Thanks this.

That's exactly what I said with the last company,20 trks.I'll never go back to a large company. But after over 2 yrs of driving junk and points on my CSA I welcome large companies. At least I don't have to worry about something happening while im driving. There are large carriers that are good but you have to have exp.

Hey-I feel confident in my job being around though i probably have a different way of doing it than some people.I really work for a driver staffing company(truck driver reant-a-bum as i call it).Since my first day back there(part time some years ago)i've been on the same job doing other things when i have the time.
Since i've been there,i've redefined the job i have.It was dedicated Willcox,AZ to Loveland,CO down to Coors for a beer load to Albuquerque,NM then empty back to Willcox twice a week. That kinda went away so for about eight or nine months i looked for my own work. Now i run between Willcox and Albuquerque or Willcox and Phoenix.I know when things have to be done so how i do it is my choice.Between Phoenix and Willcox i go home to Tucson till it's time to be back.
I have quit twice.First time lasted five miles.Second time they fixed what was wrong before i got back to Willcox.I could have this job till i retire or die. It's time for me to be in a different direction. So shortly i'll be doing a get home daily thing.I'd rather work nights because it pays better and when my horses get gto where i'm at,i'll have daylight with them instead of dark.
I'd really like to see trucking get to be a good job for a lot more people.Part of that is a company's responsibility, part of it's the driver's.I guess there's not a good solution.Take care.Brianmje Thanks this. -
I don't blame you,I have 147 points but none since this company I started driving for a yr ago.Best thing to do is find a company with a good safety rating and good equipment.DOT won't mess with you as much as they would with a bad safty score. Some of those point was from a tail light out and I was heading to the shop to get it fixed.Alot of the laws we have now are very unfair and lack common since but what can we do about it.

there comes a point in time in your trucking career that you suddenly understand , they need you , more than you need them.
RAGE 18, mje, tinytim and 1 other person Thank this. -
I know it was just an example, but I carry extras of every kind of light my truck/trailer can use. Most times, if you get stopped and a light is out, they'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you did do an inspection, and it burned out while in transit and let you replace it.mje Thanks this.
