Just thinking, if your a good diesel mechanic. Why in the world would you work for anyone at $20/hr. I would have my on business at those rates.
-
Good benefits predictable income? You're making the mistake thinking $20 an hour to the mechanic and everything above that money in the bank. And how many independent shops out there charge $100+ an hour? That defeats for most people the reason they seek out independents.
-
Good point, even at $75/hr Being in the mechanic business for yourself minus the overhead expenses, is still better than a $20/hr job.Good benefits and predictable income are made for people who don't like risk. If your a talented mechanic with good business sense. Your better off working for yourself.

I'll check your tire pressure for $250...
Paul313 and concdriver Thank this. -
I think that business is about as tough to make money in as owning a truck is. You have to remember they have lots of environmental laws to follow, buildings and property are not cheap, insurance on the building and land, liabilty insurance, tools, computers, etc, etc. They have alot of overhead, I would venture to guess a minimum of three times as much as most owner operators.

Yeah, all those tools have to cost a lot, not to mention all the spare parts they have stocked and ready to be installed. That's a crapload of overhead, much more than a $100,000 truck.

You sound like these newbies who think owning a truck is easy. The mechanic who overhauled my motor had his own shop for a few years and quit it to go work for CAT. Trucking is a cakewalk, or at least seems so by comparison, to marketing one's self as independent shop.
