Again I can not thank everyone enough for this conversation. The one thing that stands out most to me is the difference between the drivers who have been in it consistently and the two who took a break and came back. The drivers who have been in it consistently appear to be worn down by all the changes and grief. While the two who took a break and started back up have more optimistic attitudes. Not sure if that is related to the individuals, or the break in service?
I get the part where someone is just tired of it. Even if it is not that bad a gig. Believe me, I am tired of sitting in an office all day everyday with no windows. Tired of being told when to eat lunch. Tired of sitting in a cube farm with back stabbing co-workers. Tired of playing the office politics games. Tired of being bored all day. Tired of commuting 45 mins every day to the same place. While others would look at my current employment and tell me how lucky I am. And I wonder if I really am and can not see it. The other thing is this is my 3 gig since I graduated, and my last trucking gig lasted 10 years. That is why I asked the question. And it looks like the grass can be just as brown or green as you want to make it.
One thing seems obvious now, is if I decide to go back to driving for a living, how to approach getting the experience again. When I was turned down for lack of experience it was for some pretty nice gigs. One would have involved transporting limos and other custom automobiles. The other was for a private fleet with an above average mileage rate, and hourly loading/unloading time with no free time. So those were pretty nice jobs and the competition would have been tough no matter what.
Where I live, Roehl, DeBor, and HO Wolding are all a stones throw away. So I was leaning towards just biting the bullet and devoting a year of my life to one of them. But that no longer looks to be a good choice. I think I would have to look around for a smaller carrier that is willing to take a chance and see how that works out. I really appreciate that advice.
Thanks again for everyone's contribution. You all have given me lots to think about.
cheers
