anybody have any insight into the pros and cons of driving for a smaller company vs big trucking co?
I currently drive OTR for big co, looking at Manfredi logistics in kennett square,pa but cant find any info other than website. they run 20-25 trucks, regional and LTL reefer out of ports (currently live in philly) into the midwest. not sure what to expect in a smaller family run company. no complaints about running otr for big company. clean driving record, just finished my contract and wanting to get home more than every 3 weeks, but still make a living wage. any advice appreciated

Manfredi runs mushrooms ltl type work I see a lot of those guys out here. You might like it. Not sure in there lumper deal but u might be able to make extra money lumping your own stops. Usually like 4 pallets a stop. I do the same type thing but with pretzels. Home every weekend unless its a real long run.

A friend of mine drives for a different Mushroom Co, not sure if it's Kennett Sq or Avondale, but he runs a regional NE route. Goes out Monday, back Wed goes.home, back out Thursday and home again Sat, off Sun. He lives in Perryville, MD, loves it and has been trying to get me there. Personally I like OTR.
Had another friend recently.road test for a Kennett mushroom.hauler they had a route down 81 and across.40 Virginia and Tennessee... he ended up taking a local.gig delivering steel.
Apparently it is not bad work, just not what I want to do
Don't know anything specific on your company -
If its the same one down in TN, Ive only heard good things about them and their benefits. Low driver turn-over rate. Freight not really heavy either. I tried to get on when I lived in TN, but like I said, low turn-over with drivers. Be safe out there drivers.

Did anyone else think he meant Nebraska at first, lol?
Dinomite, Chinatown, Ukumfe and 1 other person Thank this. -
It was borderline till I read his post

I.didn't but I live on the I95 corridor so NE to me usually means northeast or new england.

the pros of a smaller company: owner is usually more hands on, knows whats going on, more personable and easier to talk to about a problem, company is generally more open about things and willing to help a driver
large company, well, the exact opposite. Oh, and with a small company your normally a name, not a number. -
though your odds are probably better with a smaller company as far as those things go, the exact opposite COULD be true. with a "hands on" owner, if the owner is a ****** you will have to deal with him for your entire employment. if you dont get along with your fm in a large company, you always have the ability to ask for a new one. all i mean is dont be lulled into thinking that it MUST be a good company just because its small.

all good points, thank you...
I dont really mind being a # with a big company. My fm knows my name, but he also has 40 other drivers to keep moving. my experience driving so far has been determined a lot by the individuals i encounter, company and customers. been with same big co for 17 mos now. w current fm for 2 mos. he is great and changed my opinion about the co i drive for, for the most part...good point about owner of a small co possibly being a #$@!. most business owners tend to be the "type A" personalities. have to be to take the risks and manage and lead. i have no problem w that as long as he/she is fair.
