Hey all. How do you experienced guys deal with high winds? Like the ones that can push you out of your lane or even tip you over.

Do you just keep an eye on the weather report and if the winds are going to get to a certain MPH you just wait for them to die down a little?

I envision going over a bridge and the wind is just crazy hoping that the van doesn't get slammed over the railing or into oncoming traffic. No escape route on a bridge. I may have control over the tractor but that van may have a mind of it's own.

If you do decide your not driving in high wind, what is the maximum MPH of wind?

If you are at least on a 30k load you should be ok. It'll get a little scary if you haven't experienced wind lifting your truck while driving. No light trailers if wind is 30+MPH. I just came out of 50+MPH winds in Wyoming with a 32k load.

    Don't look in your mirrors

Keep both hands on the wheel, turn off the radio and hang on for the duration.

Even if you do have 40K+ in the box. Wind will mess you up.

Pay attention to your terrain too. Especially when you go in and out of cuts on the road. You know, where they took out a hill to keep the road flat. They make good wind blocks and you can jump lanes quickly if you don't expect it.

Watch it running across rolling terrain too. There are spots that the road is basically on fill and there is complete open to the sides. Winds can be funnelled there and nail you with a wicked cross wind even though winds might only be 20-25. You might get hammered with a 50+ gust.

Your tractor will lean very hard to each side. You'll have to keep the wheel turned just to keep going straight. You'll see some "Supertruckers" out there, just let them get blown over. Go only as fast as you are comfortable with.

I came through Iowa on Hwy 27 earlier and it was rough and a just blew by me doing at least 80 and as I was mentally scolding him he went around a curve he started to loose control and some idiot in a car seen this and still was attempting to pass. He was barely able to get control and I thought he was going to roll for sure but he managed to gain control. He ended up pulling over at the next exit. A hour later he went blowing by me again. :what:

Yep. The same thing happened to me. This guy was driving a red T2000 with a 53ft dry van. His tractor and trailer was leaning hard to the right. He immediately got off at the next exit lol!

Drive in your comfort zone... No sudden steering movements and be braced for the wind to push you. I drive with my elbows on the arm rests ... Less tiring that way for me.

I wish I had some armrests. The way the wind was blowing I kept sliding almost out of my seat and had to push myself back over using the passager arm rest.

You can buy some that fit inside the window from the truck stop. My truck has them, but they are so worn-out lol!
