1. Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.

I have been looking for a UPS job for months now near Los angeles, CA and no luck. It does seem like they will never be hiring here. The last time I saw them hiring was when i was in high school, back in 2005

They are looking for a dockworker with a CDL in Rolla, MO. Can you elaborate on how that might workout to a FT driving position? And what are the benefits like?

They have 2 full time seasonal positions near me... Also one full time UPS Freight City driver position as well. I assume they don't have benefits, and you can be laid off at any given time...

I would definately call or put in an application. You can transfer off the dock to a city postion the next time they are hiring city drivers if you have you cdl w/hazmat.

    WickedGoat Thanks this.

You are half right, the seasonal positions suck, no benefits. The full time city position is a great job with full benefits, you can also transfer to road/linehaul when they have an open position but you will have to start at the bottom. City drivers can get laid off in the winter but normally do not.

I used to work at UPS Freight. I was there for 2 1/2 years. Although the pay is better than the rest of the LTL's at top rate by 2 dollars, you should question whether 2 dollars more is worth it before deciding to work there.

    in no particular order.

    1. The starting pay as city driver(already mentioned) is awful for the first two years. Not to mention union dues which increase as you make more."not a huge deal but still money paid out. $50 or more a month?

    2. No transfers out of state or within the state. You'll have to start all over again at $15

    3. Expect to be working the dock ALOT! UPS will exhaust all the senior drivers and give them overtime even before you will be given a chance to drive. They will miss pick ups while you're on the dock. This applies to non peak season mostly. During peak season they will drive you all summer. So you're really applying for a dock worker/city driver job. You'll be starting at 6pm most likely to work the dock. They do give you day dock work during transitional season.(spring, fall) Dead season(Winter) it's 6pm.(at least where I worked)

    4. Most of the equipment and the terminal itself are very poorly maintained. A very dirty and unsafe place. Thank god for rain or the trucks would never get washed. The old "overnite" trucks are usually lacking working gauges(speedometer broken) dash lites and A/C(yes the ac doesnt work or works just a lil bit in those old intl's. Those trucks have the "doghouse" in the cab over the motor and cook you on a hot summer day. The frion? Oh its on back order the shop said. Many drivers breaking down in those. The yard is full of potholes which isn't a big deal till it rains and you smash your head on the ceiling of the hostler/yard horse when you hit one. Our dock even had holes in it but this might vary by location.

    5. The Management/dispatcher/mechanics were mostly jerks, not professional at dealing with employees, customers,or problems. "yelling" The mechanics didn't want to even look at you if you had a tail lite out or whatever. They had that stereotypical lazy union mentality. Some of them were always reading the paper or always on break when you needed something fixed. I had one mechanic say to me"Why do you need a turn signal? It isn't like you're driving to california"

    6. no scanners on the dock to load freight on a trailer. You have to write the pro number and your employee id on a manifest. If someone misloads something they have to strip the whole trailer and get to it after the whole trailer is loaded. Scanners keep everyone from doing this. Also you can see who loaded something without stacking or whatever and make them fix it. hard to read handwriting.

7.basically UPS doesnt want to spend any money to make it a better environment or safe workplace. All they care about is trying to get you in trouble with seatbelt sensors, idling sensors, giving out tickets in the yard for speeding or on the dock for not wearing your seat belt for 1 second. I'm all for wearing seatbelts but if your not moving.. who cares.

Many employees as well as myself contacted OSHA. Just to let you all know, I'm not a complainer or over exaggerator. I just want to go to work, do my job and go home. Everybody I worked with felt the same way but just got 'USED" to it. stopped writing stuff up that needed fixing etc. They would leave the yard with a flat tire so they wouldnt have to deal with all the BS that went along with it. The terminal manager would get mad at you for going to the shop.

No this is not an advertisement for FedEx freight but that's where I am now and I've never been happier. It's nice not to have something to ##### about. thats worth 2 dollars alone and none of the formentioned problems above. Exactly the opposite of everything I said.

forgot to mention that UPS freight was also using contractors to go to the rail yards instead of using company drivers that were on the dock at nite. This happened when we got our new idiot manager. shady stuff goin on over there. But then again this could vary by location.

I can't disagree with everyting that was said although the bs varies by the terminal and starting out in the city can be rough. $15 an hour does suck but how many other jobs do you get an $11 an hour raise after 3 years? At our terminal equipment isn't washed but well mantained, management can be anal but usually they pick out the scrub drivers to go after. I'm not a union fan but I am pretty happy working here overall.
