glad to see the trailer is not bent above the wheels. Many rented trailers are.

 

Not even close since the D6 is not a balanced machine and low ground pressure

Back in the late 70's early 80's the company I leased to hauled D6's on flat beds. Remove the ROPS cab for height and put the blade and C frame on the back. I have moved a 7 that way. Pictures if I run across them.

 

We haul 48K excavators and crawlers on steps all the time. 50% of the track is on the trailer and 50% off. The thing about a tracked machine is that it spreads the weight over at least 12' of track, meaning several cross members. If you have a heavy wheeled unit, you are putting all the weight on 4 small points.

 

Absolutely correct. In all reality moving a machine on tracks is easier on a trailer than moving a machine on tires due to the limited amount of contact with the trailer on a rubber tired machine,

 

Well Considering the Cat D-6 only weighs in at a whopping 38,300 operating weight... it would not be to much weight on a Stepdeck...
Yes the displacement is better due to tracks dispersing the weight... But I am not to much on Steel to aluminum deck... hopefully he had some wood on the deck...
We see them hauled out of the Ports here in Norfolk on steps all the time.. I pull mostly heavy Construction equipment.. with a 3 axle RGN with a flip axle, boosters and jeep if needed.. I would personally not haul it up against the step... he had most of the weight in the back anyway.. if he had the blade facing the rear as he should...
