As far as this little argument is going. I don't even do long haul and I can see the advantage of deadheading.
Taking a loss in order to get yourself in a position where you can pick up another good paying load can be better than taking anything just to be loaded.
ex. Get great paying load from Laredo to Seattle. Nothing out of Seattle back to Laredo for a decent rate (to get to another good load) or anywhere close either money wise or geographically. Might as well deadhead back to a good load than take a low paying one just to be loaded. Because then you're at the mercy of the load and its requirements (breakdowns, etc.)BigJls1 Thanks this. -
I have bounced out of los angles to assumption illinois before . The reason I wont haul cheap freight for a loss is if I go broke I wont make someone else rich by hauling for a loss.

I do it every trip. The company makes so much on the load going out that they run us back empty.
Once in a great while we will pick up a load of the stuff we sell but most of it is trucked in by an outside carrier.
I like running home empty......I get paid the same mileage and can walk up the hills..
So my deadhead miles can be over 1000 per week. -
Ca. to AL. never been back.

Longest i deadheading was Montana to Ohio. But the pick up was so light thought was empty. Was one small envelope staples to floor. Didn't know what had on truck till got to government facility in la. What waste of fuel. But i got paid same empty or loaded. Its no wonder Burlington motor company went out of business.

150 has been the most deadhead miles ive ran

Last week I dh 740 miles total. Ave. 1.68 FOR ALL MILES. Felt better than hauling freight for 1.70 loaded. But .... then I'm weird!!!!

You're looking at $3400 to Connecticut. Roughly, since you didn't say where in CT. At your .80cpm loaded cost, that would be roughly $2300. So assuming nothing goes wrong, that's a grand in your pocket.
Would that not be enough to make it worth it? Or is Connecticut another deadzone for freight? Also, are you paid for those dh/empty miles? -
Deadheaded from Tampa Fla. to Momence Il. picked up a load of fresh pork going to Sheboygan Falls Wi.
