You also have to consider all the rear load/unload freight that only a flat can handle. I made 50% of my yearly pay one year by hauling skidded coils to G.R. MI those loads had to be loaded on flat only. the co I am with now, we have loads that have to be loaded/unloaded from rear. one driver has the revolution step & he cannot haul any of those loads.
Step or flat?

I think you should stay with a specialized trailer or a stepdeck. Less competition for me and my flat.
Honestly, I believe in the current enviornment it is easier to stay with a flatbed and keep moving for decent money. The rates just aren't there on a consistent enough basis for anything else unless you have dedicated customers. I can generally keep my flat loaded for $2.75+/mile without any effort or down time. I often am over $3/mile with general freight. That's why I stopped hauling OD, the rates just aren't there for me to justify the extra hassles associated with it.
