Greyhound, Coach?

I have recently applied to greyhound. Its been bout 2 weeks. Is there a contact number that you can give so I can check the status of my apparently. How long does it usually take for greyhound to call once you apply.

When I worked out of Detroit I knew a few Canadian drivers who lived in Windsor and Toronto. They all seemed liked good guys. *You are going to need a passport. They have runs that go to Buffalo, NY and Detroit, MI. If you are unable to enter the USA I don't think you will be hired.

*Canadian drivers are paid by the mile. I don't know how much but I hear when it's all said and done they make more than US drivers who are paid hourly at the top rate of about USD $22.50 per hour. So that should gve you a range of pay. Ofcourse you won't start at top pay.

*More than likely you will start off on the extraboard and will not have regular for awhile. Hours will vary form week to week. You might have to deadhead buses to another city. Drive a rescue bus out to somewhere where a bus broke down. Drive a 2nd section on a schedule if it is oversold and needs another bus. Drive regular runs for drivers on vaction or called in sick etc etc. Sometimes you will be working your butt off and other times it will be slow. Depending on what city you are working out of and if they are short any drivers.

*Most runs will have you away from home for 1 night and come back the next day. But then again some runs you be home everynight. When you layover away from home they put you in a decent hotel like a Holiday Inn or Comfort Inn.

Best thing to do is just go to the station and talk to a driver. I'm pretty sure most will be happy to answer any of your questions.[/QUOTE]

 

I used to work for Greyhound and worked out of the Toronto, Ontario Yard.. LOVED the job, hated the schedule. I worked for them for about a year in 2008. I was on the spare-board.

For pay, You'd get $15/hr for stand by (first 30 mins at boarder/delay is free). Driving pay, i started off at 68.5cent/Mile. As long as your moving, you got paid good money.

90% of the runs got you back home THAT night. I only really had to stay overnight occasionally in Ottawa or Buffalo.

You sometimes drive buses out of the states back into Toronto. Sometimes they are Greyhound US buses, Sometimes they are New York Trailways buses.

Everyone, doesnt matter if you have a ABZ or a G lisence, goes through their full 2 month training course as if your starting off as a G lisence driver and they pay for everything. You'll even do your MTO B License driving test with the Greyhound Instructor. How often you work would depend on how many people were on the Spare Board. When i was there there was a shortage..

I'll give you an example of why I didnt like it.
I get called in for 3:30am (they give you 4 hrs notice on a call in), Deadhead a bus to Barrie on, and pull a commuter run into Toronto. Your finished at 9:30am, you go home. You CAN be back in at 9:30 THAT night, or they may call you in for 3:30am, OR later in the morning. You NEVER knew, so you didnt know when to plan your sleep.

Another Example: They can call you in for 6:00pm. You sit and wait for something to overload for 6 hours, then they send you home (they always sent you home after 6 hours). Now, lets say you get called in for 6:00pm (This happened to me). The 11:59pm (it exsists) to Ottawa Overloads, now you have to go to Ottawa, and you have not enough hours to get back, your in Ottawa Hotel that night. Also, Greyhound CANADA STILL had the 7-Speed Manual Tranny's. you have to rely 100% on the Tach as you can't even hear the engine, and you have to be PERFECT because Your Gear shifter, doesnt go down thru the floor to the Tranny, It goes down through the floor and then back 35-40' to the Tranny. ALSO, you had to fill in all your pay sheets, forget to add your delay at Border, or for GCX (Mail) droppings, or wrong miles, and youve just screwed yourself out of money.

Do it if you want... like i said, I enjoyed driving the buses.. they drive like cars and WILL go 130km/h if you get a newish non governed bus. I just hated the schedule as I was Getting Married and at the time, WANTED to be home with my wife.. lol... Man how things change!
