Of course I don't think thats good, but it's definitely the basement on profitability wich is necesary for a newbie to know. Not a bad rate if its a 2,000+ mile move though. Any car hauler that claims they've never hauled cheap freight at some point has a long nose gettin longer.

Keep in mind that before Central Dispatch you could refuse to place your key in the ignition for anything that did not pay at least $1 per mile.

These days, moving a load between FL & GA, if you can get .45 pm you are one lucky dog. Central isn't always going to get you any better rates as they have ruined our industry by allowing dealerships to post their own cars and fly by night brokers who undercut each other so much that they are changing their business names every few months. If you opt to pay their over inflated fees (like we have a choice, right?), you want to make sure you are going to be paid in Cash or Cert Funds. Many of the smaller dealers that insist on paying with company check will leave you twisting in the wind when you find the check is no good and they aren't required to have a bond.

Sadly, even with our repeat snowbirds, we have to reply on Central to load the back haul. You cannot trust their rating system all the time as larger companies seem to be immune to negative ratings. As a small family owned company, we have had to fight tooth and nail to keep our 100% rating by documenting EVERYTHING each and every transport.

What prices are posted on boards, and what you haul the car posted for, could change for the better. It's simple, if you can get the car, and drop it, call the broker/whoever, and negotiate the rate higher...... it isn't rocket science folks. With all the fly by night car haulers out there, of course the rates will decline, especially if more cut throats start showing up. Talk to the customers, build relationships, make more money. That will prove the winner, no matter what sector of trucking. Good luck.
