I've got several old rigs, one of the sucky things is when all the capacitors dry out and the radios don't perform as well. Of course caps can be replaced but at some point you have to add up the price of all of the caps (if you can still get them) and then ask if the radio is worth it. Case in point, my Royce 1-625 probably needs all caps, as does my Courier 23. (it needs tubes too)

Otherwise, yes some of the old rigs are still kicking. And some of them were built well, unlike some of the radios built today.

Caps can be purchased at any electronics supply store. The values are marked on them. Try to always use same micro farad rating. The voltage can be increased to the next size. This will give you better life. Tubes can be had at swap meets and online. I have many good tubes in boxes from radios that i have collected that have been tested.
Its all up to the individual. I would rather put new caps in a great old radio then waste it on cigarettes or booze. You can recap a mobile radio for less then a pack of cigarettes .......lol

I haven't priced what caps go for but truthfully I figured it would run well in excess of $10. I don't know that my Royce 1-625 base is even worth that. You think Rat Shack would have all the caps I need? lol
