I really hate to hear guys talk bad about a certain engine, or engine/Transmission setup, when it is their employer that is the problem. Detroit, Cummins, and Cat all make great motors. Even after our Communist government put absurd expectations on them, concerning Exhaust output and fuel economy, they still manage to put out a great engine. Then some ####### from a company tells their mechanics to choke these great motors back, and tinker with all the settings. Then the drivers start talking about what a piece of trash they have under their hood.

The problem is not the motor; it's your company.

Ah, EXCUSE ME! But I OWN THE ##*CKING COMPANY! Believe me, we are trying whatever we can to get these DD13 to run, they are set a 410/1450 from the factory.

I really don't feel that we should have to have 470/1650 under the hood to haul what we do, we are never, I repeat, NEVER over 50,000 #

So, in my case, what is your solution? Why can't this NEW/ MODERN motor keep my 30 year old design, much smaller ISM in sight?

And yes the ISM is the same year emissions and is set up just as it was from the factory. Believe me, I would love an answer on this, I want the trucks to pull, I want better fuel fuel mileage.

Eagerly awaiting your "this is the problem" response.

Well, starting the post off with such classy language, sets the tone of the post. That vocabulary, being used in a public forum such as this, doesn't make you seem like a very well educated person.

Anyway, I did mention in my post about the government putting impossible expectations on the engine manufacturers, with regard to emissions. Then you yourself mentioned fuel mileage. You can't have your cake, and eat it too. Lowering emissions is going to take away from engine performance, plain and simple. Your desire for the most miles per gallon you can get, is going to take away from performance too. You have to decide which is more important to you. You can be the first truck to the top of the hill, or you can be the driver getting the better fuel economy. You can't do both.

What are ghe power settings flr the DD13.

If its set to anything less than max power, you're killing the engine slowly. I don't care what you THINK you need to run for power.
If you feel you must castrate them, cut the max speed, not the power.

What do i know, I'm just a dumb truck driver. Fleetowners are the king.

Did you really use "bad language" here, and then chastise me for it?

I will apologize for my one word "language" BUT maybe you shouldn't just go around pointing fingers at people or situations that YOU PERSONALLY don't know anything about! You set the tone of the conversation by basically stating that all company owners were pencil pushing dumb ###*s.

Did you even read MY POST? Explaining that I have TWO IDENTICAL YEAR trucks, with IDENTICAL year emissions on them, neither has been tampered with.

To go further the trucks pull IDENTICAL TRAILERS, with IDENTICAL LOADS, IDENTICAL WEIGHTS, and trucks are set up VERY CLOSE, they both weigh 14,500, they are BOTH S/A, they have IDENTICAL TRANSMISSIONS, with IDENTICAL RATIO SETS IN THE TRANNY.

Yes they are geared different, the Pete ISM has a 3.07 rear gear, the Cascadia's have a 3.42 rear gear. As you know the ISM is a small 10.8 litre engine, the Cascadia has the DD 13 a 12.8 litre engine.

The Pete has a TALLER GEAR, a SMALLER (by TWO FULL LITRE) ENGINE, and will literally walk away from that DD13. AND it gets OVER a mile to the gallon better fuel mileage doing it. No, it isn't the Driver mod, as I can not get much better mileage in the DD13 than my drivers can.

So to put YOUR question back to YOU, "you can't have it both ways" ok, then WHY is there such a difference between these two? Go ahead and tell me that I get better MPG on the Pete because of the taller rear gear, OK then with more gear the DD13 (and a bigger motor) should out pull my Pete, it just doesn't happen.

Oh,and by the way, this is NOT an isolated incident, I own eight of these Casacdia's they ALL run the same. Your da*mn right I'm frustrated, because at the end of the day, I have spent MY MONEY to buy these trucks, put them on the road, and give people jobs, and it is MY butt if it doesn't work.

Exactly what do you have "invested" in this discussion? I truly believe if it was YOU putting up with the poor performance, the problems, the expense, and it was YOUR name on the check for fuel ever week, you just may find yourself using some foul language also.

    Sincerely,

    Stan

So the 3 out of 5 of our 08 cats that did not make it out the gate day one , was not the motors fault had 86 miles on them. 82 miles from th plant ( our trucks are never decked, so close), to the dealer. 2 1/2 miles from the dealer. Yeah great product !

One thing I'm not is a mechanic. I know Con-way does everything they can to cut trucks - speed, hp, torque. I wonder if that has anything to do with the amount of injector trouble we have? My truck just got new injectors and an extra 100 lbs of tourque and the difference is substancial especially with a heavy set.

Not an engine issue but another problem we've had a lot of with the Cascadia at my terminal is windshield washers quitting. Mine went down a few weeks ago and the problem was a T fitting that spits the line broke. It's located above the center of the engine on the firewall. I picked up a few of them at our shop and fixed two more that day.

With a Cascadia if your washer motor works but nothing is coming out open the hood and look for it spraying on top of the motor. The T was the cheapest piece of plastic I think I've ever seen. It's a two minute fix and i don't miss using a squirt top water bottle as a washer.
