Are you going to orientation in Trussville or in Oklahoma City?

I used to run a truck with crst malone, here are a few tips...

If you want to make money, try to stay in the east chicago, indianapolis, st. louis triangle. High rate short hauls were better than long hauls for me. Keep in mind just starting out it will take you a while to get the hang of chaining/strapping/tarping your loads. I would generally get a 500mi or less load in the morning, drive to the receiver and park if they had a staging area, or park close by. Be there when the gates open and get unloaded first. I would already have a load booked close by going out. So in the morning I would unload, load at the next shipper, drive to the receiver, rinse and repeat. If you can keep this pattern and try to limit your hometime you will make money. Going home for a weekend generally cost me about $250 not counting lost productivity though I lived outside a shipping lane. Also try to keep your foot out of it. I drove 60mph progressive shifting and keeping out of the turbo as much as possible pulling about 7mpg and putting fuel money in my pocket.

    Good Luck

EDIT: Also you do not have to run Malone loads, though many of them pay decently. I had a few brokers I would regularly run loads for to get home.

I should be going to trussville. It's 300 miles away as opposed to 1000.

Flintstone where are you from how far northwest? I dont know if crst has access out through iowa etc there are tons of electrolux loads. If you're west of the dakotas though ouch. Though if theyd let you run cali and arizona you might be golden.

I dont care about the money. If i have a choice of clearing 1000 and not getting home or getting home for a layover sunday.. and making 700 and getting home friday evening.. ill pop for that fuel all day long. Im 48 years old i realise my family and friends are what is important in life. Thats one reason i like the self dispatched idea. If its friday and theres a 1300 mile load west that delivers monday.. and i dont feel a need to go home i can do it. The nagain that thursday afternoon when youre just "UGH i cant stand being in this truck one more minute" i can sacrifice the money and head my ### home.

And honestly from the miles i see the median crst and maybe flatbedders run.. i can do both. If im in dixon, il and theres a run to my hometown that breaks even on a friday morning ill probably go for it. I LOVE being with my family and friends. Doing this i can bust my ### sunday to friday then have a couple days of intense fun with them when i get home.

CRST can get loads in Iowa and other places out that way. I ran through Doug Olander's office (he's one of the CRST agents) in Sioux Falls. Debby Wolf's office, I believe is in Virginia, but they have a very far reach when it comes to getting loads.
Not saying you'll have a good load all the time wherever you are... they can't magically make loads appear in, say, middle of nowhere, Montana. But they do what they can.
And this also brings me to another point.. we pulled an agent's trailers, and it's something which may work out better for you, or it may not. We ran flats, steps, and mechanical detach RGNs. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages versus the other, especially since his RGN didn't have outriggers. Situation dependent, it may be an option which could open doors for you. Leasing a trailer through CRST, your only option is a 48' spread axle flat (which may either be aluminum or steel) with a headboard. So it's something to consider.

Renting CRST's trlr is definetly something I am trying to avoid! $185 a week for a rental is just rediculous! Anyone got a 48 x 102 for sale?

Those 48's are more expensive than the trucks we drive man. Check the prices a new/near new one is 30k. And they dont drop much. A ten year old one will go for 20. The 185 is insane though. Im goign to try to lease an agents trailer (like he said.. may be worth it just for the extra attention from the agnet) and if this ends up working out in 6 months get a bank loan for a nice used one. It'll pay for itself in a year and a half easily.

I did. I'll have to put some feelers out to see if they're still on the market. Do you have a preference for steel or aluminum, or for a certain manufacturer?
