Let's try to clear this up a little bit...NO ONE IS TRYING TO TELL ANYONE HOW TO DO THERE JOB OR TELL THEM THE WAY THEY SHOULD DO IT!!!
(I'M NOT SIDING WITH ANYONE, JUST HERE FOR INFO) PowerWagon has simply put an idea on the table that he believes could help ALL O/O's compete with large scale company's. He has mentioned on a number of occasions that the "idea" needs criticism and critiques to make it better and that is why he is here.
This thing has gotten way out of control due to what seems to be big ego's...The "This is how it is and that's just how it's going to be!" attitude sucks!!!
379, you stated, "We,re all for helping..." (just a question) Why does it seem everyone here (In this thread and others) tries to discourage newbees/beginners from gathering information to be better off on the road or just starting up? I am pretty sure this is a rhetorical question, but I like to hear opinions. I keep seeing the same thing over and over, you can't make good money doing this line of work (not in exact words of course). You're a veteran it seems, do you make a "good" living? Was start-up difficult for you? (Just trying to create conversation!)
Please, anyone can answer the last two questions above.
Thanks! -
The advice geared to discouraged you is not being uncharitable. It's a risky business. They're not discouraging you from gathering information... they're trying to discourage you from getting into it. And, they're probably a bit tired of hearing failure stories.
You have 3 absolutely critical issues that mean the difference between survival and abject failure and they are, in no order... Sufficient capital to start and operate, finding market connections, and operating legally and safely.
Any business burdened with big debt these days is taking a huge risk. The business is almost impossible to predict, there's nobody on your side but you. Not brokers, not shippers, not 3PL, not trucking companies, not loadboards, not lenders or finance companies, and to a degree, not even your fellow truckers. The successful ones have done so by having made market connections that they benefit from - specific contacts and companies and in some cases, even just picking the right strategies to maximize their profitability. You present competition, in the form of yet another person who might bid down THEIR market niche.
Now, if you're not discouraged, you're either naively optimistic, or are resourceful enough to have figured out a strategy to survive swimming with the sharks. There's a few people out there who profit from having you get into the market, and they're ones who will make money OFF YOU, and they're still in it for themselves, not you. Nobody else is encouraging people to get in.
Not ready to throw up your hands and look for a job somewhere else or work for someone else first? Well, welcome to purgatory
rollin coal Thanks this. -
Maybe its not ego.....maybe its seasoning.......OR the lack thereof. These "old school" drivers know thier craft. If they didn't then they wouldn't have been around to have attained the title "old school".
New drivers trying to tell old drivers how to do it better, faster all the while missing the essence of what the."old school" folks are saying. Actually, new drivers/new participants at TTR historically have a pretty short shelf life, meaning they typically dont stick around long.
So yes, folks get tired of the same ol know it alls and bull slingers ( not to be confused with bull hauler
)! I've not seen folks who are legitimately looking for industry answers NOT find them here, because this forum is a smorgasbord of information, however, the aforementioned know it alls and bull slingers should beware

LGarrison, RickG, 7-UP and 1 other person Thank this. -
You might as well close it . It's in the wrong forum . Hotshotters do not want to join together in some sort of organization . They are single truck O/O's for the most part because they are very capable of performing and succeeding without the "assistance " of others .
O/O's in any sector will simply lease with a carrier if they want the methods powerwagon brings up to be used .
He doesn't have a clue about who O/O's are or why those chose to be O/O's . -
We get the impression you would like to manage this "consortium" you claim will benefit O/O's . That much salesmanship always has a financial motive .
O.K. , I just looked at threads started by powerwagon . He's a wannabe that despite his marketing expertise can't figure out how to make it . He wants hotshotters to form an organization that experienced hotshotters don't need but he and other wannabes will gain " marketing leverage " and useful information from .
I really think he should go to M&H Logistics .
Maybe he should go to expedite . There are multiple truck fleet owners there that might be able to benefit from some of his ideas .Last edited: Mar 1, 2013

Maybe you should refer to the old adage about assumptions.
Being attacked personally, for what you assume, which isn't true in the slightest, is not only aggravating... refer to the sentence above. -
Ok, since we are no longer actually discussing the topic of the thread here, I'm calling this one done.
