I've always loved trucks and truckers. I think they aren't given enough credit. This country would be shut down in a matter of 3 days without truckers. I want to know if this is a good career choice. I have a High School Diploma and am 19. I have a clear criminal record. I love the fact that I can be on the road and travel and see places most people will never see. I know it's a rough and very demanding job. 11 hours a day on the road. I know I will be away from home. I know that even the simplest things like getting a shower can be very difficult. I know that I will have to eat on the road. I do realize that I can get my CDL at age 19 but won't be able to do long hauls. I can start out regional and then work my way up. Do I need any high education other than to get my CDL? How hard is it? Can you make a decent living trucking? Thank you all for reading and helping me. :)

I also want to note that when I was younger I traveled a lot on the road. I've slept in a car in rest stops and been on the road for days on end. I loved it.

No, you don't need higher education. Just attend a good CDL school and apply for intra-state trucking jobs. Those jobs are out there, such as delivery jobs for construction/building supplies or maybe moving companies, cement tanker(delivering dry bulk cement/flyash to ready-mix cement companies), agriculture, etc. All moving companies, such as Mayflower also have agents leased to them, so the moving companies and the agents both have drivers.

    Household Movers (bedbuggers)
Their agents can be found in the Yellow Pages or online.

There is good money to make in trucking & the best is tanker/hazmat. With tanker/hazmat you can make $60K + per year. Some companies may have their own requirements for age running hazmat stuff even intrastate. Some fuel companies haul diesel to railroad hubs for fueling train engines or to truck stops or gasoline to service stations.
You will need CDL endorsements for hazmat/tanker, plus TWIC & a passport for Canada runs.

Driving over the road you will drive about 120,000 mile a year. So times what ever they will pay you per miles is how much you will make a year. I take showers everyday. They are FREE with 50 gallon of fuel. The truck stop give driver a shower card and you just swipe the card every time you buy fuel. You get shower credits. Most shower credits last 7 days. TA and Petro truck stop are he same company so you can fuel at TA and shower at Petro truck stop

You can spend $150-$200 a week on food pretty easy eating in the truck stop restaurants. $2 to wash clothes and $2 to dry them

Too bad everybody did'nt feel the way you do about truckers.People think are job is sooooooo easy.I'd like to see them try it even only for a day.In my opinion this carreer is the most disrespected carreer there is,the pay and very little raises proves that. But for you it sounds like you're looking more about the travel side then the pay and thats good. Many come into this profession with only one thing on their mind,MONEY.Then soon find out they're not making hardly anything and those are the ones that fail in this industry.Looks like you did your homework and know what to exspect.I think I did answer your question about making a good living. You as a new driver one day will not make nothing more then money to live on the road. While with a trainer you'll get paid salary which is roughly$325.00 to $3.75 a week. After training you'll get paid by the mile but chances are you'll be sitting more then driving. It gets costly on the road so try and stay away from truckstops only to get fuel. They're way overpriced and their food has alot to be desired. For some its hard learning how to drive learning the rules at the companiy, how they do trips, qualcomm ect.Every company is different. But companies do realize you're very new and gives you a good amount of time to learn the ropes.Just go to school learn and you'll do just fine out here.

It's a good career but your problem is your age hardly any company's are going to hire you you can't cross state lines till you are 21 so you would have to look for a company that would hire you for only local work. And the. The insurance company's would also be hesitante and insuring you but it is possible you are just gunna have to look very hard

your age is the biggest issue. However, at 19 you might be able to find a yard jockey position then hit the road at 21. And with the jockey exp you will be a better backer than half the drivers out there.
