I just finished my first week of school and my first day of double clutching. I figured it would be a little challenging, but holy smokes, this sucks! Ok, ok...I suck. Of course the youngster has it all figured out. I'm using the toilet plunger as a stick shift to help. The Stranahan's whiskey seems to have helped the most. Lordy, lordy...this is by far the most humbling driving experience I've ever had. My dirt bike threw me down a couple of times (still does), my Harley just loves me, my CJ has been known to roll over and play dead, but nothing has screwed with my mind the way this does. IT SHOULD BE EASY. What am I doing wrong?

Over thinking, over analyzing? Push clutch in about half way, out of gear, let clutch out, push clutch in about half way, put in next gear, let clutch out.

Thanks for the advice and kind words. After the second week, things are much better. Backing seems to be going well. Seems I can parallel and offset better than straight. Isn't that a laugh! Testing in couple days. I'm really looking forward to getting out on the road. I applied to Werner, Swift, and Schneider on-line. I'm concerned that Schneider's training is so short, but not sure that 6-8 weeks is all that desireable. Of course, I'm assuming I'll pass my CDL exam and that I'll get hired!

You"ll get it in time. The best part is yet to come. Once you learn to double clutch good then have someone to teach you how to float the gears. You will love that plus it won't wear your knee out like double clutching did mine from backing and traffic jams. Welcome aboard!

Also something you will learn if you can't use the rpms is to go by the sound of the motor.

Just passed my test! Graduate tomorrow! Yippee! Double clutching is still giving me fits, but I figure training will smooth out the timing. I did well on the backing portion of the test and I'm excited about getting out on the road. I've got several job opportunites and now, I have to make some choices. 6-8 weeks of training seems like a long time to be away for the first time. 2 weeks of training seems a little short. How awesome is it that I have a choice! Werner, Schneider, May...anyone have any helpful information that isn't provided by a recruiter? Money isn't that important.

FWIW, I've double clutched maybe 7 shifts since I passed my test and graduated school 5 months ago. I float exclusively now.

Stay away from Werner. I would stay away from Swift, too. Schneider is alright, but apparently going downhill. They pay better than Werner or Swift. I would apply to Roehl and go with them if you could. They pay better than Schneider.

Werner will try to team-train, which isn't really training at all...worse yet, Werner only requires 6 months of experience to be a trainer (unless they've changed that since I heard about it a few months ago). I'm at the 5 month mark now with Crete...I had a GOOD trainer...and I wouldn't dream of trying to train anyone at this point, or for another couple years or so. Yikes!
