I drive OTR at present and for a number of reasons am going to switch. I bought a nice 1 ton diesel dually but am unsure which direction to go in. Reading this forum I try to read between the lines of the negative people who have tried and failed, and the positive posters who have done well. I need advice from those who are making a living at this. I am thinking of hauling RVs but don't yet know in what capacity. Should I tow an RV out and deadhead back? Should I buy a trailer to haul multiples? If so, which kind? Which type of trailer is easiest to get a backhaul with? Can I haul an RV out then find my own freight back? In a nutshell I am looking for advice on what type of setup to have for the most versatile use and easiest to get loaded with. Would I be better off leasing on with an RV company or a hotshot/expedited freight company? Why? All help from successful operaters would be greatly appreciated.

My uncle used to pull FEMA trailers with a Dodge Cummins. He did pretty well. He pulled them there to its destination then find another one there in that area.

From what I understand, pulling RV for the manufacturers only pays for the delivery and you have deadhead back unless you find something to haul back or part way back.

Regarding which type of trailer to buy: you'll need to decide what you want haul. Since you have a 1 ton, you'll need to be able to haul at least 16k of cargo. If you want to add vehicles to a partially filled trailer, a dovetail and ramps would be in order.

There are plenty of options. My signature shows what I am using. Am I happy with it? Yes. The deck height is low, my 2' dovetail is only 20" off the ground and I use 8' ramps. For what I am doing, it works for me. Would it be suitable for all types of hauling? No, but it works for me.

    Much Success!

I am in the same boat as you, been researching RV Transport for a few months now and still can't get the right direction down. I'll sum up what I have found,

    RV Transport:
Can't have your own authority to get hauls back on your own (FMCSA law, Can't have multiple authorities and since your "leased" on, you work for them on their authority.
Whatever your trip out is you have to divide by 2 and that's what you will be making
They make you log while deadheading back
    They pay low rates
Can't find a company that is "truely" there for the trucker.

I'm leaning towards HotShoting myself with an 08 F450 dually 4x4 with a 38' Gooseneck enclosed old car hauler with sleeper. I'm starting to think now though that an open flatbed trailer is the way to go though, more opportunities.
