i posted this in the tanker and dump forum as well but felt it equally apply in this forum as well. normally i wouldn't do duplicate threads but although its dump related i feel input from o/o in other fields could also greatly apply.

    http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...looking-belly-dump-work-2013-northdakota.html

I have a truck and belly dump trailer, I want to get into doing road construction projects. road construction wont start for another 1.5-2 months up here but im starting to talk with a few company's kinda try to get my name out there a bit. I talked to a company today that got my interest a bit, found them threw a creigs list ad.

company is out of south Dakota. basically a brokerage company that works with several of the big guys 100% road construction no oilfeild (this is a plus to me) the idea of working for someone that contracts for several of the bigger company's seems like a plus for steady work. they pay every 2 weeks with a quick pay option for 2% pays next day. although i have 60 days operating expense the quick pay seems like a good way to make sure the checks are good quickly vrs running for a company for 30-60 days only to never get paid. they claim they ran 20 trucks last year and looking to up it to 30 this year. they also contract with company's in tx if i wanted to go down there next winter. they have there own operating authority that i can use or i can use my own, as i already have my own i would run under my own. seems how i have not done much belly dump work out here, bought my trailer last fall and have only used it for a few small projects for some people i know. so this may also be a good way to learn more about who is who and who the better contractors are. I work for a water hauling company driving one of there trucks right now.

now that we have covered what i see as advantages to a company like this now for the bad. they charge 10% of what they get from the company's that they contract for. is the advantages worth 10% vrs contracting directly with 1 of the larger company's.

they claim they are having new contracts drawn up for 2013 and will send me the contracts soon. so i should have a chance to review the contract soon. witch will be part of my decision as well.

what are your thoughts of a company like described vrs directly contracting with one of larger company's (ex. knife river, strata, border states ect)

Why not just go to the big players and work directly for them. Around here the large construction and aggregate companies don't use brokers. They hire trucks. directly and set the rates their willing to pay. Tri-axles doing site work or hauling mix are usually by the hour. Trailer work is mostly by the ton......

When there was a lot of work it was great...... Now not so much!

10 % is about the going rate for dispatch services with your own trailer. It's one phone call VS. several every day. Same with the contractor, he calls the broker and "orders" a certain amount of trucks, VS. calling many O/O's to line them up.

not necessarily nd has approved over 720 million to go into repairing and upgrading existing highways in the state for this year. many major highways are being totally rebuilt improved widened ect. a lot of materials to be hauled that will never touch a lease road or oil feild location.

iv gotten mixed reviews on this type of company from people iv talked to out here. including one that told me he went to work for a similar company and never got paid for any of the work he did. just about sunk him. said all the work he did for the particular person was all for one contractor even though the guy claimed to contract with several company's as the one iv talked to claimed and he said he would have been much better off just to go to work for the one contractor vrs the 3rd party. im still keeping my options open and still haven't seen the contract yet. iv got my name in with a few of the bigger operations. hopefully it comes down to picking and choosing who I want to work for vrs who has a spot for me in the coming few months.

One reason to go with the dispatch service over direct is length of time to pay. Two years ago we workedwithBrigham oil direct and at times were 120 days out on the pay. Ive heard similiar things about continental oil

yes it is pretty common with oil contractors to be paid at 90-120 days. part of the reason why im trying to avoid oil field and do state/county road construction projects. but in the end ill do whatever makes money but my hope is to do mostly road construction vrs oil flied. and am prepared for about 90 days if need be. I did like hearing the pays in 2 weeks or next day quick pay for %2 when i asked about time till paid on invoices with the company posted about.
