One more question: what is more benefitial, a tandem or spread? If my memory serves me right, you can haul more weight with a spread.

    Thanks again everyone...

That is NOT going to happen. used flatbed rates are thru the roof right now, and you can basically buy a brand new one for the same cost as a used one. Look to spend $15K+ for a used, good condition 48x102

I hear you and I would buy a newer one, if my credit wasn't screwed up or I had more in the budget,,,not your problem though. Can you tell me if I bought a 48' x 96", how much worse off I would be than a 48' x 102"? Thanks

    BTW...I can find a 48' x 102" all day long for $10k or less. I found a 48' x 96" Fontaine, spread axel with air ride for $4K

stay away from transcraft between the years of 98 - 2002, they had a paint problem that lead to very bad rust.

Ok,,went and looked at a 1994 Fontaine 48' x 96", spread axel & air ride. Has a front lift axel,,yes, front. Has 4 new brake chambers and both axels have been replaced. Rear axel was replaced about 200k ago and front axel was replaced about 100k ago, or less. Its a wood deck and needs one board replaced. Brakes are about 50% and tires are about 50% as well. It has a BulkHead and it is all in good shape, confident it could pass a DOT Inspection. The guy wants $4k for it. The only thing I don't like is the BulkHead and it has two racks to stow a side kit, that I wouldn't need but, may someday..lol What do my comrade flatbedder's think of this deal?

You can hang your chains and binders on the head board if you wanted to.
