Pregnant Woman Killed in Vehicle Crash on I-12, Husband Charged
An expectant wife and her unborn child are killed in a vehicle crash and state police say her husband, who was driving, is to blame. State police say the single-vehicle crash happened on I-12 at mile marker 26 in Livingston Parish around 4:30 Wednesday morning.
According to troopers, the couple's Ford Explorer was headed westbound when it went left and into the median. It is believed the driver, 24-year-old Bernardo Mercado of Baton Rouge, steered to the right and over-corrected, causing the Explorer to flip and roll several times.
During the flips, the passenger, 30-year-old Gabrielle Mercado, was thrown from the vehicle. Troopers say Mercado was pregnant. She was transported to Our Lady of the Lake with serious injuries, where she later died.
Her husband was taken to Oschner Hospital with moderate injuries. Upon his release, he was booked into the Livingston Parish Jail. Bernardo Mercado is charged with negligent homicide, careless operation, and operating a vehicle without lawful presence in the U.S. -
Seatbelts save lives. If she'd had hers on, she might be okay. Not forgiving the husband but still...

Yeah I know. When I was a Paramedic and later a Police Officer, I can't tell you the number of times someone would have probably survived a crash if they'd been wearing a seat belt. I've seen people killed in very light, minor wrecks where a seat belt would have saved them. A large percentage of fatalities are ejected from the vehicle through closed windows, windshields, rear windows, etc. I've found dead people in trees before, where they were flung out of the vehicle in a roll over. I've seen people walk away from horrendous accidents while wearing a seat belt. I've had people tell me they know a guy or a friend that would have died if they would have been wearing a seat belt, but I just don't see it. Way too many times, I've seen the seat belt save a life. Another thing is that it will keep you IN YOUR SEAT and may allow you to control the vehicle after an impact. I was sitting at an intersection and witnessed an accident once, where a lady got tapped in the side as she went through a intersection. She slid to the other side of the seat against the passenger door. As she was still rolling about 40 MPH, she was reaching for the steering wheel to try and control her car, and plowed into 3 other cars causing further damage and injury. Even she admitted, the second impact would never have occurred if she had been wearing her seat belt.

I was in two major car accidents as a result of bad weather. If I hadn't been wearing my seatbelt in either of them, especially if my daughter hadn't been in a car seat in the first one, she and/or I would be dead right now.
