I am will be graduating from a trucking school very soon. I have been researching companies to the point that I have a headache and have no clue what company would be better to start with. Couldn't find a thread for it either. I know there is a list of companies that hire recent grads. I was wanting to hear from other recent grads or experience truck drivers from your own experience which companies would you recommend to start with and which ones to definetly stay away from?I know I'm not getting rich anytime soon to my knowledge but I have a family to raise and that is the reason I wanted to start driving my current job isn't cutting it. All pointers will be appreciated!

You won't get rich, but you can make $60K + annually within the next 12-24 months with tanker. Look at Prime Inc. or Schneider tanker school next. They both hire new CDL school grads. Do a year with either one and you can move on if you wish.

What city & state do you live in?

    Hope this helps :

Burkhart Enterprises : East of Knoxville
    LandAir : Greenville,TN
Maverick : Terminal somewhere around Johnson City-good pay and fairly good hometime.
Crete : Terminal in Lenoir City(dry van-which usually doesn't pay the best. Crete also has a refrigerated and flatbed division)

Prime - tanker division terminal in Chattanooga
    Purdy Bros. - Knoxville
    Averitt - Knoxville

There are some food service outfits around Knoxville. Check Careerbuilder website.
If you apply, which you can do online also, ignore the "experience required" and apply anyway.

Maverick has flatbed, refrigerated, and glass, and you'll start out at a minimum of .33 cpm when you go solo. Refrigerated pays a bit higher by the mile because we wait longer at customers. By the time you've been solo for 6 months, you'll be making between .39 and .46 cpm depending on your division.

You can do OTR, regional, or dedicated. OTR is minimum 14 days out, regional is home every weekend, dedicated gets home depending on the account.

If you have any more questions, there is a Maverick thread here, under the Trucking DAC Reports section. Lots of drivers there willing to answer your questions if you have any.

I would be sure to ask about idling policy. How are you going to stay cool when on your 10 hour break? You can't sleep in an oven. Get on with a company that has APU's. Schneider trucks won't idle between 20 degrees and 70 degrees. You can't sleep in an oven or freezing. Hope this helps.

I also graduate in a few weeks and I am going to work for Maverick. I completely agree with CaptainX3 about Maverick about the everyone helping you with any questions. Everyone has been extremely positive about the company and their experiences there. :) My recruiter is Jeff B. at Maverick, call and ask for him. Let him know Rachel recommended him from Knoxville.
