My dad fell out dead in the grocery store aisle (heart attack) as a semi driver for Coke, had a quadruple bypass, went to back to work within a month and then switched to Highland Dairy and they seem to find him okay to drive. Scares the crap out of me that next time, he will actually be driving down the road and take himself and other drivers out but what can I do?

By the sounds of your inguries / ailments I would not suggest getting into trucking , it would be very hard for you to pass the physical aspect of the testing.

If you want to ease into trucking industry try dispatching. If not that go to school to turn wrenches. No good to try and drive and then you get out there and some moron runs into you and you have to take a drug test after you happened to take a pain pill a day before. You get bounced for pissing positive good chance of getting sued and still have no job to raise your boys with. My suggestion to you is either find a way to manage your pain without meds or find a job that allows them.
jackieblue and mje Thank this. -
Any narcotic medication will probably prevent you from passing a DOT physical. If you can pass a physical, there are companies that may hire you. You could start out doing team driving with a coast-to-coast operation.
Some companies are drop & hook, such as shipping container companies or companies specializing in hauling auto parts.
Your problem is not insurmontable, if you find the right niche in trucking.
Attend a CDL school & some drivers on this forum can direct you when it's application time during the school. Forget the mega carriers; there are others that will be a fit for you.mje Thanks this. -
