EPG valve(on left side) will show codes, EPG governor (right side behind turbo) will not. Best thing to do (yes I tried it) is to disconnect exhaust airline from EPG valve and plug the valve hole, you will lose exhaust brake but can drive like that. Good luck

This is a very common problem on the D12. Sounds like an exhaust leak, and the soot may be very hard to spot because of where it is leaking. Our shop repairs this problem frequently, 9 times out of 10 the leak is between turbo and manifold.
97fld and TheEnglishMan Thank this. -
Home to do taxes...so will be taking it to the local Volvo shop in the morning. Will update with the outcome. I'm leaning towards an exhaust leak pre engine brake. I am now getting an exhaust smell in the cab.

May not have gotten the egr pipe(s) back on right.

Nutcase, your not far off the mark. They found the leak at #2 EGR valve to exhaust manifold joint. Removed the valve and cleaned up the surfaces, reassembled with new steel gaskets and clamps and hay-pesto no more leak. The bill was $416.01 which I will try to get reimbursed from Yakima Volvo who did the original EGR install. Rick at Yakima is a pretty straight up guy, so I hope they will cover some of the charges if not all. It's always a bit of a fight when one dealership has to repair the work of another.

ok so theres some good info here but let me dig just a bit deeper...on a 2007 d12 this epg valve, does anybody have the schematics on how it works in relation to the rest of the system, how to properly diagnose it and can it be disassembled and serviced (cleaned and/or repaired if need be), trying to get my trailer brakes to last a little longer but its getting hard to do running 90-120,000lbs with no help of an engine brake....
