If I had had the opportunity to go OTR, I likely would have chosen SNI. They have a lot of divisions so that if you really liked working for them? You can move in and out of divisions - including distances. Thinking ahead that gives you longevity toward vacations, pension, etc.

 

THIS is why driver pay (and freight rates) is so low.

Superior Carriers, Carry Transport or Quality Carriers may hire you straight out of school, and they pay decent.

 

Well when you're told by everybody not to expect good pay and to "pay your dues" that's just what people do. If he had said I expect to make good money everyone would be jumping on him. Nothing against you, but I see it all the time on here and I don't think it's true with a little research.

 

Yes, you're right, work cheap and 'pay your dues' is the general consensus of the old timers here. I got jumped on when I said I was looking to make $50K my first year. The comments that I got were all saying that I couldn't do it. I'm on track to exceed that; two more months left to go.

 

Whatever your choice, if you stick with it you'll be fine. Please remember there's a nice mix of fun stuff, and not so fun stuff, you'll have to keep your attitude positive. Some of the time, it's not so easy, but it's all part of the business.

 

Excellent points. Companies with several divisions can be very beneficial to a driver (and his family), because you can change divisions without losing medical benefits, 401K benefits, etc. Maverick, Prime, Schneider, Crete, are just a few.

 

My kind of driver. You want it to happen, you make it happen. The older hands were not jumping on you, they just didnt want you to wind up like so many others who jump into the game with unrealistic expectations. Theres quite a few guys who jump in a truck who think they dont have to crawl before they learn to walk.

First off you DON'T have to start with a mega carrier/bottom feeder. Put in the leg work and as long as you don't have any background/driving record issues and you aren't a complete moron than I guarantee you can find a decent job. It won't be easy and it won't be handed to you but it is possible.

Now that being said if you don't want to go out and do the hard work, than as everybody else said do the tanker gig
