    Hello guys,

new guy here to the forums.

    22 years old here.
I'm currently in my last semester of university and hoping to land a job in my degree. However, my current job is not cutting it and while it may take months, or even years to get a job in my degree(Police - hope no one batters me for this lol), so I thought why not get a CDL and make some income until I can find one. I am not new to the trucking world as my family runs a trucking company and I am very familiar with how things work internally. I come from a family of truck drivers. They say it's not an easy job but I'm ready to get my CDL and have started to looking over the practice tests in hopes of getting my permit.

Truck School wise - My father has agreed to teach me instead of going to school. Is this a wise choice? I bring this up because he has also taught a few of my family members and they have turned out very good and no problems. This is just to save my cost wise instead of going to school.

Life Style - I'm currently engaged at the moment, though the money is a bad situation for me so I am hoping this will ease the situation up. I know many drivers go home either early or late depending on their loads, or situations - of course not OTR drivers.

Just looking for any other advice for a new guy like me ... opinions..what to expect.. very eager and interested.

    First off:
    Welcome to TTR

I suggest you use the advance search button on here: it's your friend. You have a ton of questions on here that have been asked AND ANSWERED hundreds of times.

As far as your father teaching you- i think thats a GREAT idea.... but i suggest you take some initiative on your own, go down to your local dmv, get a commercial drivers handbook... read it a few times, come on here click on the sample test that are on the top of this forum, thengo back to dmv and take ALL your test (endorsements too)

THEN jump in a truck with your dad....

Good luck, and and keep us updated, im curious as to whether or not you get your cdl or not.

Get your Dad to teach you, then go to work for your family til you have more experience and decide if you want to try use your degree, or continue on in trucking. You have a whole lot more advantages than most just starting out do.

You want to make good money? Forget about trucking. Hang out at the truck stops and sell sweat pants! You'll be rolling in the dough!

Can Dad teach you? The reason why I ask is, if the Family runs a trucking business, and Dad is a solid driver, I would have figured that you would have already had several years of driving under your belt (what is it...18 and you can run intrastate?). So trucking isnt in your blood. Can yr dad teach you what you need to know to be able to drive at ANY company? Or would you do better with a not so familiar instructor?
