Never had a load like this before. Can anybody tell me if i have this secured half way right and what I should've done differently. I have a few pictures from the ground. I counted 14 straps 2 2" ratchets 1 4" ratchet and 11 4" winch straps load was only about 12k wight wise just ackward as heck. I do have edge protection under all the straps but 2 just cant really see it. Any advise or pointers would be great thanks drivers and have a good rest of the night!

First of all chains and sharp objects are not good bed fellows for my experience no matter how much protection that looks like many rub points. I do give you credit for the edge protection but would use carpet, or some form of protection better than card board. If I were DOT which I am not it would fly for protocol but would want some chains on it for my personal well being.
Oh and the pallets as dunnage is a huge no no.Last edited: Mar 14, 2013
Clasix1055, critters, The Challenger and 2 others Thank this. -
Thank you i wanted to chain it but my chains were on my other truck. I ran out of my good rubber corner protectors so cardboard was all i had left. I didnt even think about the carpet idea though. Thanks for that i have probably 300 sq.ft. in my tool boxes. Had to stuff some under my dunnage to keep it from rubbing the stainless on the back. I have to ask would you be worried about bending any of the sheet metal on the meat grinder if you chained it. Pretty sure some of the sheet metal got bent from the straps but i didnt want anything falling off. It all got bent up when they loaded it anyway ugh.aiwiron Thanks this.

Did you load that in Algona, IA?

Mudflaps, carpet, floor mats, machinist felt, anything is better than just card board unless you can get your hands on some heavy grade waxed board.
Make up some edge protectors with pallet flats and some old fire hose, old fire hose is solid gold for flat bed chain protection.
Corners would not get bent by using flat wide edge protectors.
If anything can be done to screw things up I have done it, flat bed was all ojt for me.critters, Leftlane101, The Challenger and 3 others Thank this. -
I carry a whole pile of carpet squares. If something is real sharp I fold them in half.
If I need more protection then I have I start cutting the carpet pieces in half until I have enough.379exhd, AZS, bullhaulerswife and 2 others Thank this. -
Carpet installers dumpsters, yes indeed.

Wife of a guy that used to drive for us works at a carpet store. She would get us the sample pieces that are sewn around the edges.
aiwiron Thanks this. -
Okay thank you for the tips. I used mostly rubber that was about 1/4-1/2" thick and they were mostly about 6" by 8". I'll put my old pete mudflaps to use and cut them up for corner protectors and see of the rural fd has any old hose they want to get rid of. Thank you for your advise and help!
Cluck cluck it loaded at cargill in columbus, NEaiwiron Thanks this. -
The loader got his ### reamed for that one i did know that was a no no. I wasnt there when they put that on had to drop my trailer last night for them. Got there at noon and thats what theyd loaded and he wouldnt remove the pallets so i could use 4x4s crazy thing is the took the 4 4x4s i had on the nose of my trailer off and used pallets instead hell it was more work to use the pallets than my 4x4s.aiwiron Thanks this.
