My apologies to the tow company for insinuating that they were ripping me off. If I could change the title of this thread I would. I should not have started this thread while drinking, I could have made my points without sounding like a raving idiot.I edited the first few posts. The breakdown was a blown egr tube/hose, the one up by the coolant reservoir. As I was accelerating out of the construction I heard something blow, sounded like a gunshot. I lost all boost and limped a few more miles down the road so I could pull over past the guardrails. I could not see what had blown, no smoke was coming out of the exhaust, but there was a loud moaning sound coming from the drivers side, guess it was the blow by tube, the shop I called advised me not to drive it till we knew what was wrong. My repair bill called it the EGR tube. $140 for the tube, $140 in labor for that and re-attaching the drive shaft. $715 tow for a $280 repair. Pretty frustrating.

No break down on the bill, $650 tow charge + $65 tax. That's all it shows. The issue with the drive shaft is that they initially refused to disconnect it.Last edited: Mar 15, 2013

I think you misunderstood, the argument was because the guy driving the tow truck was not going to drop the shaft, I insisted that he do it before moving my truck. That really pissed him off.

Did they strap down your cab extenders? I've heard they can be broken or blown off from bring towed backwards.
-
No, he grabbed one to check how sturdy it was. I do have a headache rack that would have made it difficult. chained up drive axle, seatbelted the steering wheel, lifted and straped and off we went, 75-80 mph to town.

You heard right. I've had it happen with a Sterling. I also had one towed back missing the drivers door, what was left of it was strapped to the deck, the driver must have not closed the door tight. Luckily they paid for damages without a fight. That tow vendor also taped up the exhaust pipe when he towed backwards, I never actually seen a turbo go bad from a tow, but I guess it possible.

Oh hell you got off easy. I got charged 496.50 for a winch out. But when you're broke down or stuck you bite the bullet and do what you gotta do to get the truck back on the road. Was I happy about a nearly $500 bill for 20 minutes of work? Not really but I was darn happy to get that truck moving even with a bill that high I'd use the guy again if I had too he was out there pretty quick and got me rolling that's all that matters in my book. Just wish the broker would've covered the tow bill for me since their idiot customer was complaining about me having a whopping 9 extra pieces on my trailer and then gave me the wrong location as to where I had to get the 9 pieces taken off which is why I got stuck in the first place. Couldn't blame rand mcnally for that wrong turn it went on the shipper that time.

Not trying to sway this either way but check out what tow guys pay in insurance. It's absolutely insane.
I used to be a service manager at a new car dealership. The guy that did our towing claimed his insurance was 19,000 a year for two trucks.
I have no way to verify his numbers and I don't know if he had alot of claims but he was generally an honest guy with me.
Takes alot of tows just to cover the insurance.
