I've traveled the 401 2 or 3 times a month for the last 4 years . I don't enjoy it . Now they have a Supercoop on 1 side in Putnam and building one on the other side .
I'm retiring in a few months . I won't miss these trips . When the U.S. started requiring passports our drivers refused to get them but a few of us already had them .

Don't blame you. I don't have a choice as I live here, but there are waaaay too many trucks chasing $1 a mile freight on this lane, lots of rookies that wanna race their 105/km speed limited truck against each other. Apparently this deal started with a ten minute whiteout, then the dance began. Haven't heard who crashed 1st or anything.

Yep, seems like many think that if they're not running against the governor every second they're losing hours instead of seconds. The funny thing is that if you just back off for a little bit and let the herd move away you can go for many miles without being near another truck. I'll never understand the mentality that has a lot of them tightly packed together.

Went through a similar whiteout near Kitchener the other night but traffic was pretty light at the time and most people were keeping lots of space.

Back in the day - 25 years ago - as an experiment - I drove a company truck up and down the 401 corridor with the speed gov set at 58 mph ( about 100 kmph ). I had a co-worker running New England the same way. And I concur, back off the pack and even with NO SET SPEED LIMIT ... the packs will disburss .... that said, if your a slow truck and ur stuck in the middle of the 'pack' you get cursed alot by the idiots ..... like we had control over those variable ......

What has the super coop at PUTNAM have to do with a WHITE OUT causing a crash Eastbound at PRESCOTT ? I was just 10 minutes North of there at that time yesterday , weather was changing in 5 minute intervals.

This winter there has been MANY Multi Vehicle Crashes in CANADA and the USA as a result of WHITE OUT CONDITIONS and IDIOT drivers.

It can happen to anyone. All it takes is for one at the front go sideways and any of us could find ourselves in the same predicament. When it happens people just don't know what to do, keep going and risk slamming into the guy in front or jam on the breaks and get rear ended? Either way it does not end well. Poop happens.

While I agree that it could happen to anyone, how about backing off and not following too close in the 1st place? I know a whiteout can come up quick and sometimes all bets are off, but getting away from the pack has always worked for me.

    Slick900 and tinytim Thank this.

Yep that's pretty much how I roll. Especially when in Ontario and the 105 limit. Much easier to put it on a lower speed and not take part in the "100 mile passes" as I call them.
