My local kw dealer tried exporting new kws to New Zealand . He got 4or5 new trucks T800w heavy spec day cabs and stuffed them into containers . He had someone down there swap the steering over.
After the first batch he never tried it again, and I never asked for details...

Not 100% sure but I think the kw's in NZ, Australia and South Africa are a heavier spec, heavier chassis and axles , could be there ended up being a lot of hidden cost too -
In this market all the American trucks come with air suspension standard for about 15 years now.
I think on the European trucks it has something to do with them mostly being fitted with heavier 6X4 bogies , and on these spring suspension is the standard.
This is the only reason I can come up with as there is no practical reason.
There are still many hub reduction 6x4 trucks being sold for line haul work (56 000kgs) on good roads.
To get Hypoid axles in a Mercedes truck means special order.
DAF is now standard on Hypoid axles and air.
Mercedes 95% hub reduction and +- 50% split air and steel suspension.
Scania 20% hub reduction and +- 20% air (Mainly on 6X2).
It is changing but for some reason there are people who think air suspension gives more problems.
Suits me as we get to charge extra for air suspension with ABB , Siemens , Alstom etc. -
In Europe air is standard on 6x4's up to 80,000kgs
You get to charge for having air suspension? -
Get in touch with a good Dutch dealer and your back up will improve no end. Their pricing is pretty competitive aswell. To be fair to the DAF product, it has improved in leaps and bounds since 2008~2009... since the XF 105's had the bugs ironed out(we have several coming throught the workshop now after clocking over a million satisfactory kilometers). Some dealers are still lagging behind though, but i think there is a black sheep in every family.
We have an owner operator who frequents our workshop but he gets his main servicing done in the Netherlands(he is an International trucker) where he bought his last two trucks....and will be purchasing his third shortly. Warranty is no hassle, quality of service carried out is excellent in all respects.
Software for your DAF should be about 3,000 euros with including leads, but using your own laptop.
MAN is a superior truck in every respect, but that is a personal preference.
At the end of the day, your 20 DAF's will give you excellent service if you get a good source of parts and advice....after all the CF 85's are a simple enough truck to keep running.
We repaired/ran a few Peterbilts...377 & 379 and a Kenworth w900L. I bought the Peterbilt parts from Peterbilt Baltimore and found them very helpful and efficient with both parts and advice....and would have no problem running a Pete again even though the nearest dealer was over 3000 miles away. Just comforting to know the parts were readily available, reasonably priced and dispatched quickly.king Q Thanks this. -
There are dozens of Hino eight wheelers being exported to Australia every week from Ireland. They are stripped to the chassis rails and rebuilt to a very high standard, cabs reupholstered etc...
If Australian customs find more than a cupful of dust in the entire truck(including intercoolers, radiators & cab interiors) the truck goes into quarantine and costs at least 30,000 Australian Dollars to have cleaned -
Our laws here only really allow 6-6.5T on the front axle. Euro 5 (I think) is allowed the full 6.5t to compensate for emissions gear. Goes up to 11t for a twin steer.
Scania only really sells the Highline 'showroom spec' but a topline can still be ordered if you wish
I've only really seen 2 toplines ever, this one (see pic) and a dark blue one running double fridges
The Hino's. Well, I've seen a few ads for them. Looks like they have a bit more grunt compared to what Japan sends us hereAttached Files:
