Most everyone tells everyone how much money they are making or what their rate is.
I've been involved in a couple other industries in my lifetime and it was never like this. You usually had an idea what others were making but it wasn't constantly talked about.
Not saying its a bad thing I just find it interesting that everyone is so free about it.
The one thing that really surprises me about trucking

I know what you mean, it surprised me also. Discretion is not big in trucking, but yet the rumors and secrets thrive in trucking. I might add, your fortunate only ONE thing has surprised you....almost every single thing in trucking has made my jaw drop

mje and kerosene jockey Thank this. -
Sad, but true, secrets cannot be shared with others.
Without getting off the subject, this is how many criminals have gotten away with crimes from years back, in addition to covering up or destroying evidence: they did NOT confide their misdeeds to a single solitary soul.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Truck drivers are unique. Truckers enjoy the nomadic lifestyle and carefree outlook of "The world is my urinal", so discussing pay is a non-issue.
critters, Sly Fox, mje and 1 other person Thank this. -
it's also plastered all over the place from recruiters trying to convince you to come to their company. where in a normal position everyone has a different salary based on performance. in trucking it's what ever the people will pay you to move it

Truckers have earned the reputation as not being the brightest bulb in the box. They are cranked out of "schools" at phenomenal rates and not a lot of criteria went into filling the those school seats. They are motivated by numbers in the beginning, and by month 6, they are getting in tune with the idea they aren't earning a worthwhile paycheck, regardless what they do/don't make. Trucking companies have figured this out and have learned to leverage this inherent weakness in truckers. They'd use pictures of perfectly ripened bananas and mangoes in a large forest of banana and mango trees if they thought truckers we're motivated by and would work for fresh fruit. At about the 1 year mark, new truckers begin to learn there is A LOT MORE to trucking, and what makes a particular job at a particular carrier good or bad, than the mileage rate but until then, many will quit and move for 1.5 cents a mile more not having a clue what the end result may actually net.

If that is the one thing that suprises you about truckin, you must be with a great carrier and having a great day.

It's not braging it's security if I tell you I make 2.50$ a mile and the company offers you a load about the same thing for 1.75 a mile you know your getting stiffed and when you take that and I come back for another load like that and they offer me 1.50 a mile and I laugh at it and they tell me well find someone else I just lost.
mje Thanks this. -
