I drove for 20 years and stopped about 13 years ago (2000) went into software, got downsized out of two different jobs, and maybe I should have my head examined but would like to get back into driving. Used to be when you started or had a gap in employment, you would just list I worked for Joe Schmoe and Joe Schmoe would say sure he did. Now with background screening I don't know if that' s possible.
I rented a rig with instructor for two hours last week to ensure I had my shifting down and could still blindside in case I get a company road test. Took me a few minutes to get used to shting again but no big deal. After 30 mins or so I was comfortable like I had never left.
So ideally am looking to make min $1K a week, weekends off (will work 1 weekend day). I will run local or regional but only did 2 weeks OTR in my career and quit after 2 weeks, could not stand the lack of home time. I see now you have to have 34 hours off before you get your 70 back and refuse to spend that in a truck stop. I used to work under the 12/15/60 or 70 in 8 day rules so 34 hours off sounds nice..
I have a lot of experience, have ran NYC for years but hate it (your risking your license every time you go down there), ran double full size (B train) on the NYS thruway, reffers, box have tanker endorsement (need hazmat) and am looking to get a job for expereince and then relocate to NC SC or GA optimally by the ocean. Am currently looking in the notheast and Raleigh NC area and wondering if there is a way I can get hired without having to go OTR or sign up with one of these school scams. I have to sell my house and see what I can get for it, NY is bleeding me dry in taxes. Hopefully this will take place before Oct 2103 or things will start to get real ugly like bankruptcy and stuff.
So any ideas on carriers that might take me? I'll do what I have to do to survive and am currenly making $30K on unemployment, but that will only last a year.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
KC

You could try Epes out of Greensboro, NC. I'm not sure what they would do about the gap of driving a truck for the last 13 years, but they run east of the Mississippi, and home weekly.

You won't have any problem taking home $1000.00 weekly once you get your hazmat & TWIC and drive for a tanker company. These days companies will want you to go through some CDL formal training though; that's just the way it is these days. You can live close to the beach with these tanker jobs because many chemical plants are close to the ocean or you can haul fuel and be home every day. Florida, Texas, Alabama, are coastal states with no personal income tax & lots of tanker work. Their are 9 states with no personal income tax. Believe me, I know, my wife is putting pressure on me to move to Nevada which is one of the nine.
Your unemployment office may help you get free CDL school without going through a trucking company school.
Many tanker companies websites say experience required, but they still hire guys in your situation & others fresh out of CDL school. Just do the online applications and try. Schneider has their own tanker school and may have a terminal where you want to relocate.Crossroads Thanks this. -
Here are a few tanker companies to research; the websites will show where the terminals are.
Clean Harbors
Foodliner (3 divisions)
trans-system
Miller Transporters
Thyssenkrupp Steel
Tankstar
A&R Transport
Quality Distribution
Indian River Transport
CTL Transportation
Tribe Transport (tanker division)
Bulkmatic
Superior-Carriers
Pyles Transport
Groendyke
Prime (tanker division)
Schneider ( tanker division)Last edited: Feb 28, 2013
texman985 and Crossroads Thank this. -
Florida Rock & Tank Lines has terminals all over the SouthEast. Might be what you're looking for. 9 of their terminals are right on the coast of NC, SC, GA, FL, AL.
Don't know anything about their pay.Last edited: Feb 28, 2013

Try calling the HR dept. of GSF (Golden State Foods) in Garner, NC that is next door to Raleigh. This is a local job delivering McDonald's restaurants...hard work but great pay and benefits, home everyday, or you may run a layover trip , but you will spend the 10 hr break in a motel paid for and already set up for you. I just retired from there in 2011 after 30 years...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am filling out online applications in the NY area (no response yet) while getting the house ready for sale, but maybe something will come in.
Tony, used to work for Martin Brower for 9 years (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Fridays,Chillis then bought out by Pro Source . I would have stayed with that job forever if Ameriserve hadn't bought Pro Source and bankrupted us. 4 day work week great food and motels. -
I am starting school soon in TX and want to thank you for the info on driving tankers. $1,000 per week sounds a lot better than the 5-700 I've been hearing. Do you know if they will hire you without experience? Can you tell me some TX co's to talk to?
Chinatown Thanks this.
