Bear with me a little longer please, I'm learning about Detroit Series 60 as fast as I can. The truck that we're (probably) buying is an 06 Freightliner with a 14L Detroit. How can I tell if it's a DDEC III, IV, V or what? The engine serial number is 06RO847828. We're trying to figure out how much the HP can be boosted, and decide what to do about the EGR and how much all this will cost. Can anyone recommend a tuner or shop in the Beaumont/Houston area?

    thanks again!

DDEC V can be taken to 515 hp with no custom tuning. A lot higher with tuning. A guy I have been talking to, recently had his '06 14L 60 tuned for $300. In that, they deleted the EGR and boosted his hp and torque. He has picked up a substantial mpg gain and really likes the way it pulls now. There are many options and people that can do these type of things. The cost can vary quite a bit.

If you could find a 2003 Detroit 12.7L (without the EGR) you would be way ahead on fuel mileage. The difference between a 2003 DDEC IV 12.7 and a 2005 DDEC V 14L with an EGR for us was about 1.25 mpg with the same driver and the trucks setup pretty much alike. We had rebel127 do ECM work on the trucks and the 2005 is doing much better now. All the drivers love the tuneups. You should pm rebel127 and talk to him BEFORE you buy an EGR truck. (I sure wish I had, but we're very happy with his work on all the engines, including the EGR engine.)

Both the 12.7L and 14.0L PRE-EGR engines are available as a factory reman option.
