I just received my CDL a couple of months ago and after looking at a TON of companies I ran into a question and maybe someone can help me. I noticed a few companies like Maverick for instance has automatic tractors and well.....what happens when you decide to switch companies or go local after however many years would any of your experience count and would you still be eligible for hire to the 90% of companies that still use stick shifts tractors after driving an automatic tractor for years???
If so how much of an adjustment would it be and is hard to find a job??
Thanks.
Going from Automatic To 10 speed???

It's not rocket science it's moving a stick forward, backward, left, or right when the rpms reach the right point it is a non issue. Timing might be off for a few shifts, but if you can shift going to an automatic won't erase that. I will say though if you plan to make a long career out of driving then make sure your shifting is tight.
Me? I'm a steering wheel holder I only care about getting from the shipper to the receiver safely and getting paid for it. I'd drive a princess pink truck with sprinkles and glitter on it if it was going to get me paid.
On a side note I think it's safe to say that if the Lord were a CMV driver he'd be rolling an automatic cuz they are heavenly.Last edited: Mar 21, 2013
SGTSmokdU, cetanediesel, striker and 5 others Thank this. -
Love it! I switched to an automatic Volvo iShift in January. All the tough dudes who think automatics are for sissies have no idea what they are missing, I could care less if I ever go back to a manual transmission.

I've never drove one and I hope I never have to drive an automtatic tractor if what i hear is correct. Even in a car I have manual overide on an auto trans ( I can select gear). In a truck I hear that is not true. Sorry, but when I am going down a steep grade at 2 AM with black ice, I sure do not want the truck deciding what gear to be in. I will try to stay away from automatics at any cost.

Well May I suggest that if you have not been on a bicycle in more then 5 years to borrow one and get on it and ride it(if you know how to ride and balance already) so now learn and learn well how to shift a 10 speed or any other speed they are all pretty much the same, You will be rusty when you get back in one but a inspector or person hiring you after the automatic will ask you what have you driven in the past, just be sure to tell him to buckle up and that your last truck for however long was an auto. he will give you some slack on getting you adjusted to the shifting. I went straight into an automatic out of school, one of only a few the company had and I was happy as a pig in do do, and I changed to a 13 speed when I changed companies after my 6 months, and I was rusty but passed the test with only a few curb rashes while trying to grab another gear. Just remember in the autromatic that you will need to manual shift it on down grades to keep it under control, I have a story of this but I won't bore you. Take care. Big Duker Thanks this. -
what you hear is not correct, just like in your car you can choose a gear if you like.
Big Duker Thanks this. -
I would give anything to get back into a straight gear... I've had to be towed 3 times since I started driving and 2 of them were trans issues
-
You can certainly manual shift them, they have a selector to do that. They are not as bad as the Big Old I like to shift guys think they are, you have every bit of control over what the truck does as you do with a manual shift it just does it for you when you want it to... If there is anything in life that makes my life easier then I'm all for it. Just me I may be labeled LAZY but that is fins Call me lazy.

My truck is fully automatic, but it does have a manual mode where I can select gear. Call me a steeringwheel holder if you will, but I love my auto and it gets freight from point a to point b like a stick.

Ah, so you can manually shift an automatic? That sounds a lot better than the story I heard.
