Most fire and police are using trunking technology that makes scanners mostly useless. When looking for a weather radio, look for one that has a "travel mode" (constantly looks for and locks onto the strongest available signal as you travel)

    allniter Thanks this.

my phone has a weather app. it was free and includes doppler.

at one time i had 3 police scanners on my phone. 2 of them picked up from los angeles to new york city and miami.
of course, they do require the internet.

i never used them though so i haven't had them for a long time now.

Uhhhh ok, I've been scanning trunking for years.. There's plenty of scanners that can trunk. Even digital trunking. The Home Patrol is one such scanner.

I used to have one in the truck, and more often a vhf/uhf Ham radio I am LICENSED for, that is capable of scanning some frequencies I liked. I usually have various CG channels programmed, and in the winter would program the state DOT snowplow frequencies if I was in a snow area.
The snowplows turned out to be pretty interesting.

I also had some jerk at a KY scale climb up into my truck, look at the 2-3 ham radios I had in the truck (at the time) and do the 'AHA, what is this?" routine, and made me explain what every one was for.
I showed him my license, he had no idea what he was looking at.

Hey, Sherlock, scanners don't have microphones dangling from them? (free tip)

Another genius on a NC scale, soon after they banned radar detectors, did the same thing.

I wish they would go after those #### illegal linears and import radios, instead.
