legion-recrut to join the French Foreign Legion. You need a passport and enough money for a one-way ticket to Paris, France. A representative at the airport will take you for your physical, meals, and basic training. Years ago I was rejected for being a couple of years over the max. age limit.
The U.S.Navy is going through RIF (Reduction in Force).
Swift has one of the best programs for veterans, so apply with Swift. Tell Swift you're interested in their veterans program.
Goodwill Industries has a program for free CDL school for veterans.
The local dept. of labor and unemployment offoce has funds for free CDL school, but it's time consuming and lots of paperwork to apply.
Military Sealift Command may be an option. You can start the process online and you will need TWIC.
TMC also has a veterans apprenticeship program. Aplly there also.Last edited: Mar 23, 2013
landstar8891 Thanks this. -
TMC Hires vets , but not sure if they will send you to school , maybe others here can fill that space in . But if they have preferential treatment to vets you may have a shot . Better to ask questions. Good luck I'm sure something will turn up .

Something doesn't sound right about 'no tax returns'. You have a wife, and 3 children....and claim you were self-employed, but didn't earn enough to file tax returns? Are you receiving food stamps, housing, or some other assistance?
I thought the 'earned income credit' applied to people in your situation, but you have to file tax returns to get it.superpet39, Corporal_Clegg and Ghost Ryder Thank this. -
the legion does not send a rep to the airport to pick you up.... not even close. The person that wants to join has to present himself to a recruiting office or directly in Paris at the main Fort where the selection process is... I have been there and did my 5 years... hardly a place for a family man.
OP may want to consider going back into the Army... the struggle outside is not worth it. If the last 3 years have been on/off, you need to get letters and things of that nature to document your activities or lack thereof... have to explain your last 3 years. Won't be much different than a caregiver/housewife scenario. -
FFE will probably let you in. Their program is not for everyone though it can be a little intense for some.

Why can't you just tell them you were unemployed due to raising kids and your parents were supporting you? I don't understand why these mega companies make such a fuss over employment records.
pattyj and The Challenger Thank this.
