I run local, and it will cost me over 2500 bucks a year because the Feds require me to log off duty to take a 30 minute unpaid break each day.... Yeah, really helps my personal life out losing money.

I really don't see the reason for the uproar over the 30 minute break that will be required.Am I to understand that all drivers are that rushed that they can't stop for 30 minutes.I stop for 30-60 minutes 2 or 3 times a day and get my work done.There's more to life than chaining yourself to the seat and peeing in a bottle as you're driving down the road.landstar8891 and VegasfanNJ Thank this.

It is also hard on your health. Ever wonder how us old farts got into such bad shape? It wasn't from too much excercise, I can guarantee that.

And you are never stopped anywhere in your whole day for at least 30 min? Are you on paper or Elog? With paper, that's soooo simple. Just round down the time a 15 min block when you stop, and round up a 15 min block when you take off. 30 min easily taken care of. If doing anything anywhere, there is NO regulation that says you have to show on duty every single minute at a customer. Just when you are doing something. If one is creative enough, this 30 min thing is essentially a non issue. If it makes it thru the legal fights and stands, I would be willing to bet most folks will not even give it much more than a passing thought after they have built their life around it for a year or two. And if you will lose that much money if it does stand, you are really working for the wrong folks. I suggest a move.

The 30 minute break should be a non issue for anyone doing a multistop or local delivery. You don't seriously spend your entire time at a shipper or consignee on duty, do you? What irritates me as a driver who primarily runs at night, is the stipulation that a 34hr reset must cross 2 1-5AM timeslots.
By way of example, I worked Saturday this week as makeup, was out sick Thu-Fri. Started at 0100, done at 1400 (short regional run). Now, I have a run scheduled to leave at 0001 Monday. Saturday 1400 to Monday 0000 is 34 hours. Under the new regulation, it seems to me that I would not be legal to run until 0500 Monday, in order to cross two 0100-0500 slots and turning my 34 into a 39. This scenario happens to me quite frequently.
I realize that in this particular instance, I'd be OK on hours since I had Thu-Fri off crossing the stipulated time slots, but had I not, I'd be forced into running off recaps, which really does not work well in my situation.Cowpie1, volvodriver01 and landstar8891 Thank this. -

IMO...If anyone is working over 50 hours a week,you must be with the wrong Outfit.It is about working smarter not harder.
I worked 34 hours last week and brought 2,500 to the dinner table after my deductions.I am off now for 2 weeks and have a round trip lined up that pays 10,100 in a 5 day turn.
Some people just never seem to ''get it''. -
I'm on looseleaf, despite working for a major carrier that's on EOBR fleetwide. Still extremely irritating as it's going to force me into short runs on Monday, if dispatch decides to play by the rules. I like my 600 mile Mondays, darn it!
Time to get my own truck. A coworker just quit, bought his own, and leased to a local carrier, and has never been more relaxed while doubling his income and significantly reducing his hours away from the house.landstar8891 Thanks this. -
If i can do it,anyone can do it.I am braindead when it comes to turning a wrench.So if you can turn a wrench you are ahead of me.I have a Machanic i pay to do most all my work..If you have 6+ years driving then you should be getting your own truck and enjoy the benifits of truck ownership..It is not bad at all and pretty simple IMO.
You will make at least 3x more and you will make 10x more hometime..2 weeks ago i took a load from Dansville NY to Brooklyn for 2,200 bucks.Then one from Jersey City to Buffalo for 1,200.That was my whole week...I have a 1998 Freightliner Classic that has never been on a hook and is a mad money maker.You DO NOT need a new truck and a fancy truck to make profit.JPenn Thanks this. -
I am a local fuel hauler that is paid hourly. I stop 5-10 times a day loading and unloading, but remain on-duty each time as it is part of my job to wait at loading racks and to be out of the truck while unloading. I don't think the company will want the legal liability of me logging off-duty while I'm still actually loading/unloading. We will have to pull aside at a station or a loading facility and take a 30 minute off duty break.
