Four million miles driving plus another million sitting in the dead head seat or laying in the sleeper.

Well, I had a lot of friends way back then, but Lord they all have passed
I had an L J Mack that would do about a hundred when a Ford could'nt run that fast.
I knew all them old cops out on twenty-nine and they all knew my pace
When they saw me coming they'd pull off the side, smile at me and wave
I knew all the gals in all the old stops from Virginia to the Florida line
When they heard that big "J" gearing down they said they all knew it was mine
They'd have the coffee on the table and a smile on their face when I walked through that door
Lord it sure was sweet way back then but it ain't that way no more
Now all them young cops out on twenty-nine got them souped up Mustang Fords
And there ain't a rig running any line could pass em like before
Them boys just ain't got no sense of humor, I pass by and smile and wave
They just look out through them mirrored sunglasses and point that old radar gun at me
I pull in that big fancy truck stop, them folks don't even look at me
It's five bucks a gallon for number two diesel, and ten bucks for the noon buffet?
But I ease back out there to my big shiny rig and I guess thats what makes it all worth while
The bossman's son owns the line now and he sends me up the road in style
I got twin chrome stacks, big shiny wheels, and a six hundred under that hood
I got AM, FM, cassette, CD, CB, and a cellular phone
I can step back there in that big sleeper, sit down in my swivel chair
Stretch out on my big double bed and feel that custom air
I can watch a video or a movie on my satellite T.V.
    I got a microwave, a refrigerator, man I even got a place to----well
I had a lot of friends way back then but Lord they all have passed

Funny, I thought I'd posted in here once upon a time, but I guess not.

I've been at this awhile, took a couple year break after a layoff and spent some time in college. So I've only actually driven 26 of the 28 years I've been trucking. I was one of those dreaded dispatchers (Actually an asst. terminal manager) while I was in school. I don't have an true accounting of all the miles like some guys, a few jobs I know how many miles I ran, a couple others I can only ballpark the number. But either way it adds up to over 3 million. Not bad considering most of my driving jobs entailed a lot of non-driving hours. Oilfield, gas odorant deliveries, carhauling.

Only ever had one incident, a lane change that caught a car that had snuck into my blindspot back in '88. Did the can opener on the rear quarter panel, and ruined my lugnut covers. It didn't even dent the hubcap. LOL! I never did convince the ex-wife that her being naked across the doghouse had absolutely nothing to do with that one!:biggrin_2559:

Couldn't even begin to count the tickets, most of us from those days collected our fair share of double nickel violations. They never showed at home, and they were nothing but revenue anyways. Back then, it was just one of the costs of driving; the insurance companies hadn't gotten the death grip they have now, as the trial lawyers hadn't quite made it into the multi-millionaire lotto that accidents have now become. I've never had a logbook ticket, and the only overweight was due to ice buildup on a carhauler.

And it strikes me as funny, that while I take it much easier than I used to, my last million was by far the fastest. I've put 800k on this truck in 5 years and 8 months; and 300k on the prior one in just over 2 years. I'd hate to count how many cars that equals! :biggrin_25524:

25 years.....just short of 2 mil. 1 preventable accident and 0 tickets (moving violations). Quit driving in 2003, and kinda miss it. Although it did get to the point where it was just a job, and no fun anymore. I remember more 1,000 mile days than I could ever count, but that pace took its toll on my health and relationships. I guess I can leave the pedalin to the kids now that I have a job where I get to tell them where to go and how to get there!..MOTOR ON DRIVERS!
