I agree. Many drivers cannot handle the time away from home. Especially when younger (like the OP is).
Or, the pay isnt ever what they THOUGHT it would be and they cant cut it.
If trucking is in your blood and its something you want to do - go for it.
To pick trucking cause your down and out and at the end of your rope isn't the best choice.
They wont hire me!

Yeah, it's a hard thing to give advice on. Part of me wants to say don't do it unless you have a passion for it, but alternatively it's amazing how you can develop a passion for anything if you're trying to support yourself and a family.
Trucking is a rough job, and a rough life. You CAN make it into a very successful and rewarding career, as long as you're willing to make sacrifices and endure some hardships along the way.
I suppose all I can really say is this - you won't really know until you try. If you end up hating it, at least you know... My only real regrets in life are the things I didn't try at all, not the things I tried and failed at. -
Some companies look at unemployment and no proof of what you were doing as a possible jail sentence being followed out.

There in lies the rub. Seems most people today want everything without making any sacrifices or putting in any hard work along the way to achieve their goals.superpet39 Thanks this.

Because he has never said he was in the service. Others have chimed in about the different branches, but the OP has never said anything about being in the service.
I too have to wonder why he never file tax forms. What with the EITC and the child tax credit, he could earn zero and get a refund of a couple thousand dollars.
You have to file to get it. -
Here in Florida if your unemployed you can apply to the state and the State will pay for your school. Over half my class at Roadmaster in Tampa were there on grants given by the state.
The Challenger Thanks this. -
We don't have a draft right now, so 'getting out of the army' won't normally mean 'avoided induction'.
The OP did say or allude to he was in the Military, back on the first page of this thread.
I mentioned the type of discharge which would effect benefits he may be eligible for.....as well as maybe some criminal activity or record associated with a 'bad' discharge.landstar8891 Thanks this. -
I served in the Army but never saw combat. I never filed taxes bc I was a moron. I attempted to get a grant but here in Henry county GA they denied me. My Dad ewas a truck driver for 30+ yrs and I have it in my blood.
Chinatown and The Challenger Thank this. -
I can't understand why so many on here are telling this guy how horrible trucking is and not to do it, but their own profile shows they've been driving for years. Why don't they follow their own advice and quit driving? Trucking can provide a very good standard of living for your family if you get the endorsements for the better paying jobs. Of course, you can't support a family if you're sitting in a truckstop TV lounge or playing video games; if you have that much free time, you're driving for the wrong company.
lilrich, superpet39, LaBubba and 1 other person Thank this. -
