So unfortunately in last year in january i was convicted of a class b misdemeanor possession of marij. My license was suspended for a year and i just got it back in janurary of this year. Ive been clean a full year ever since and can pass any drug test given. Ive also held a job within this pass year as well and have a steady work history. My question is with this misdemeanor, will it ruin my chances of getting hired on to a company? Im willing to take any company, considering it will be my first year to get experience. Im 21, so i know that will limit my choices. But does anyone know of companies that will work with me? Any advice and help is greatly appreciated

It's a drug conviction. 5 years at most companies. Wait 4 more years, stay clean, and then apply your heart out. Right now nobody will even look twice at you.

Not sure where you live, but if it's in the crazy bible belt states you might not have a chance. But is it even a conviction? If so, did you have a bad lawyer? Try getting your record expunged if you expect to get a trucking job, that way they conviction will go off your record. Might be worth the lawyer money if you can get it off.

Even if you get it expunged (which doesn't take it off your record, but makes it less accessible to the casual viewer), there's still the license suspension... that's going to be a kick in the shins for you trying to get into this industry.

I live in houston. And yes, its unfortunately a conviction. I was looking to get it expunged, but i dont have the extra money to do so at the moment. I figured if theres companies that hire felons i could possibly get lucky with my misdemeanor

If you live in Houston, there's that Love's truck stop there... I know it might be a little out of the way for you, but it'll be worth making a stop there. There are some free publications for truck drivers in which companies advertise, including those who offer their own schools and such. Give them a call, explain your situation, and get the answer straight from them. If they're willing to send you to their own school, then that's a good sign. But be honest with them.

Actually, there are a few truck stops in Houston. So you can probably find the same publications at any of them, if one is more convenient for you to go to.

You are and always will be a felon...You made that really bad choice knowingly. Now , you're still young and while I personally think that you have no place in the industry , You can after a few years possibly be hired as a driver , It will be difficult at best, simply because there are lots of folks that made the smart choice to stay away from drugs to start with , that will be going after the same jobs that you will be going after...and when it comes to that the companies ins. carriers are gonna pick them over you...almost always. If you do decide to continue , get all of the endorsements that you can , get the TWIC and your pass-port if you can...and get a steady job and stay with it, that way you can show a good responsible work history for several years after your conviction , and that you are willing to do the right thing now. It is possible for you to pursue your dream , you must realize though that your going to have an uphill battle. I'm not telling you this to judgmental , or be ugly , or holier than thou...I'm telling you this because you need to know the truth. Good Luck in your quest.

I stand corrected windsmith, I read the original post wrong. Thanks for pointing that out. But, the Op should still realize that while its a misdemeanor or a felony, the fact remains that he was busted for a drug violation...that sends up all sorts of red-flags to a potential employer and their ins. carriers.

Alcohol is TEN TIMES more dangerous. Marijuana is legal in two states, soon it will be all states. As soon as the old farts die out and stop trying to run peoples lives we will all be better off.
