Hello all, newbie here (to the board, not to trucking), and apologize in advance if this question has already been asked and/or in the incorrect forum.

Anyway, my company just acquired a new 2012 Pete 384 (replaced an 87 Marmon... talk about a beast!) and it's a sweet truck except for one thing - no matter what we do or what trick we try, the #### thing won't idle past 5 minutes. In the past I've had Internationals and Freightliners that, if you activated the Cruise Control fast-idle, it would override the idle cut-off - but not this truck.

Any Pete specialists out there who can help us out? Is there a trick to override the idle cut-off or are we stuck with it?

I dont know about any tricks but if you change that parameter in the ecm it will stop.

5 min idle shut down is one of the requirements to be CARB compliant. This can be programmed out with PTO modes or others like that. We have some customers request this. Usually involves getting the factory involved for updated engine files and sometimes this is not dealer accessible.

Sooooo.... what would be the easiest way to do this? How does one change the parameter in the ECM - is that something we can do or would a Peterbilt dealer have to do it?

As one has said before, "explain this to me like I'm a 6 year old..."

This would be dealer involved. They may have to download a new engine file from the factory. It depends what engine is in it and how it is emission certified. If this is a company truck, you better have permission from them before you start messing with it.

It is a company truck, but my division is in charge of it and we do have some leeway with it - something like this they wouldn't care. Sounds a bit more involved than I was hoping - with past trucks I've always been able to get around something like this with some trickery, but that was also many (many) years ago, I guess with the new trucks with their rules and regs it takes an act of congress to get around something as simple as this... Oh well, it was worth a shot. :-/

I don't know what engine you have, but with International, (I assume they would all be the same), if the truck was ordered with an engine spec'd for "Certified Clean Idle", this is a CARB compliant engine. This means the engine is certified for use in CA and must be programmed for idle shut down. I did read you can extend it to 15 mins max and still be CA certified. If you want to take out idle shutdown, then the engine is no longer CARB certified. We have had customers order trucks and then change their minds afterward, here is what happens... We contact the factory and tell them what the customer wants. There is a fee for this, I don't know how much, but not cheap. The factory must make a new engine emission label because the engine is no longer certified for use in CA, and is no longer "Certified Clean Idle". The new label also has to be paid for. They will mail it out by UPS or someone. Once we get the new engine label we install it and take a picture of the truck and engine with the new label. Then the factory will allow us to download the new engine program that will take out idle shutdown. I think most trucks are ordered standard to be CARB compliant. If your truck is not then the idle shutdown feature should be already unlocked and would be simply programmed out.

Just went out and checked, it is a "Certified Clean Idle" CARB compliant engine, specifically a PACCAR 12.9 liter. What you say sounds right on the money Heavyd - I've been dealing with Jurassic-era Marmons for the last couple of years (you can get those beasts to sit up and beg if you're so inclined) but we're finally getting rid of those in favor of these new Petes. I'll upchannel this and see what the powers-that-be say - sounds like we're just gonna have to suck it up and live with it, but thanks for your technical input. :smt023
