I guess it depends on the candidate. Personally, there is no way in hockeysticks I would start a guy at 0.50/mile. You've got no room to go from there or it starts getting stupid. That's a sweet run and tons of OTR guys are falling all over themselves for hometime. I'd look to start a guy at about 0.35, if he got along with no troubles, on time, didn't tear up equipment bump him up to 0.40 after 90 days. then a couple cents/year.

Averaging 9 to 10 hours a day the driver would need to reset each week if they did 6 nights. After the new rules come in they would then need two days off.

Let's do some math here with your mileage pay, .35 cents per mile at 400 miles plus having to do a little setting. That comes to 140.00 dollars a night, no self respecting driver I would trust would touch that, maybe a reject from a bottom feeder but no one else.volvodriver01 Thanks this.

Funny ( not ha-ha) that most times everyone on here is slamming companies that would pay as a 1099 when in fact the drivers are company drivers.
For me, it was interesting till he said the magic "1099 for now". Any driver worth his salt would want the rate way up there to compensate for the 1099. I don't see this as any different than any other larger company looking to skirt the tax laws. -

and this one.
volvodriver01 and Leftlane101 Thank this. -
Not trying to skirt any tax laws... this is the industry we are in... there is nothing wrong with being paid on a 1099...
BTW this is a new company for me and I will try and grow it with quality people who will work just as hard as I do... it is my investment (in equipment) and reputation that was able to secure this work... this is actually a sweet job for someone... no hassles with shippers/receivers... equipment taken care of... med & dental... -
I'm glad the economy is treating you and your friends so well ! However, I would suggest that MOST OTR drivers are being paid less than 40 cpm and crying because they want to be home more. Some drivers are pretty good faker's too if you didn't know. It would be a shame to hire somebody you thought was going to be great and have to pay them a pile of money and have them showing up late, tearing up equipment, and quitting or getting fired a few months later. 0.35/mile starts the guy at $700/wk, home every night, and weekends off. you kidding me ? a guy could do worse. and you can give him those little bumps in raises down the road, I know we all like that !
