Hiring a driver....

You own the equipment, your truck, fuel, and you dispatch the driver . That my friend is a company driver, not a sub -contractor and that is skirting the tax law. call it what ever you wish. " a sweet job". It is what it is .

Think about this. Your driver has to meet all the qualifications you need, + a haz-mat endorsment and you want to pay him on the cheap.

 

I suggest anyone hiring a driver find the references reputable and reliable, the best way to do it with my past experience is to hire someone you know will do the job, keep your truck clean and take care of it and not beat it like a red head step child. 700.00 dollars a week on a 1099 is 245 dollars you will have to report so that leaves someone 455.00 dollars. Figure it at about 12 hours a day at 5 days a week, a hourly wage of 7.58 per hour.

So where are all the drivers at that will be applying for such wonderful pay?

 

I was thinking a W-2 and benefits. and did I mention 0.40/mile after 90 days. I believe I did. yah, if he had a veteran driver walk in with solid work history and all it would be a bit low. you'd want to grab somebody like that and pay them right if you had a chance. we agree on that. guys like that are hard to come by though. If he had to take a chance on someone with a few years experience or something, I still say crazy to start them at 1k/week.

 

Even on a W2 you will still have to take out some taxes, depends on what state. Still a low ball wage and would not touch it with a 10 foot pole even at .40 per mile. I used to work nights and weekends driving and made 19.00 a hour hauling fly ash, not a hazmat load but still that was back in the early 1990's.

Be honest even at .50 cents a mile I still would not touch it myself.

 

i think tony and i said it best , pay the guy good and treat him good , what goes around comes around..... its no wonder truckers wages suck, listening to these guys.... jesus, danny why don't ya just pay the guy 3 cents a mile , screw him out of any benifits and give him a god da mn 50 lb. bag of gravy train to eat once a week......

 

ITs hard I imagine to find "good employees"..trial and error deal unless you know the driver personally or have worked with them previously. But its a fact if you try and draw from the driver pool that's available with low wages even to start with you attract those who just want an easy job...on the other hand you offer up decent pay , decent equipment, decent schedule , those that YOU WANT to hire will have their interest perked. You bait the hook with a little worm...you get wormy prospects , bait the hook with red meat and the lunkers show up.

 

Here is the lowdown on a 1099, if you do not qualify with any part of the IRS rules all your driver has to do is call the IRS hotline and turn you in, so then you have the federal government going after you. And yes for what you are asking 1k a week is cheap.

 

Not trying to be confrontational. telling the truth. You mentioned health and dental. The driver pays 53 + change per week for that.


You are wrong, the government doesn't allow Company drivers to be paid as sub-contractors. If that were the case ALL company drivers would be paid that way.

1000 a week before taxes and insurance is CHEAP.
