Im not a big guy, only 5'7'' and 180 pounds. I've been traveling around the northeast, in some of the worst areas crime wise there are. When I was OTR, I hit alot of so called high crime areas most sane folk dont care to go. been a bit nervous more than once, but never to the point where I was in fear of my life. Its been said already, your best defense is using your head, keep your eyes open, attitude in check, and watch your surroundings. carrying a weapon is a personal choice. No one can make that decision for you. keep in mind, most companies have very strict policies concerning the carrying of weapons. I personally, know of three cases where company found out the driver was carrying, and told them leave the truck at a drop yard or terminal and go home.

A can of Starting Fluid and a Bic Lighter works for me. Instant Blow Torch if used properly.

I remember hearing an adage - the best weapon is the one you never have to use.
I did carry a handgun OTR, but I knew for certain I'd never be sent to Canada. I ensured it would be one which was legal to own in all 50 states (California is especially stringent with what they'll allow) and that it was transported in a legal manner in all 50 states. Never had to use it on the road. NOLA in the aftermath of Katrina was a different story, but that was a whole different scenario, altogether.
There is no substitute for judgment and discretion. If you're carrying a handgun, and you're not situationally aware, it'll do you no good. It should also never be your only means of defense.

I saw some stuff at Gander Mountain the other day and the label had a bear on it and it was on the self defense shelf so it must've been "bear spray":biggrin_255:

I love all the people who are saying "all the year's I've been out here I never needed to carry, been to very bad places and neighborhoods without any problems." All I can say to that is, times are changing and it isn't getting any better out here!! The FIRST thing I do after I shut my curtains is grab my LOCKED safe and put that .357 on my bedside table. God forbid I ever have to use it BUT if I do the last thing I'm worried about is if I was technically allowed to have it. I dont feel the need to carry at a shipper/receiver or in a truckstop; however when I am asleep in my LOCKED truck, I have no reason not to believe if someone is trying to get in they are doing so to cause me harm!! Yall can grab your wasp spray, knives, starter fluid, tire thumpers etc. etc., Im gonna trust my S&W .357

I have a phoney ball point pen that shoots 22 cal. shorts. It's not much more than a zip gun, except it was professionally manufactured. Bought it off the street from some guy. Not accurate at any distance, but it works fine.

I've had my truck searched once since 06, and that was just a guard at coke in El Paso. I don't worry too much about it since we rarely do NYC, and I don't cross that northern border. Out of all the things I've had in the cab, my Benchnade automatic makes me the most paranoid. It's a ###### felony in CA!

So, who's going to hold up the garbage truck? If it makes you feel better, fine. Just make sure I'm not downrange when you start blastin' away. I'm allergic to lead, and I'm not too sure about all y'all's ability to point the thing properly under stress.
