As someone who has been considering hauling coils recently, I appreciate all the input from experienced drivers on this
    subject.
Never realized there was so many varying opinions on how to do it correctly, but this thread will be helpful to me if I decide to haul coils in the future.

Our opinions don't count, fmcsa laws do. Get the green book and read up on the laws governing flatbedding. I'm gonna practice what I preach, apparently I've missed some things.

Are you aware that you are infact required to have a securement device over the top reguardless is you use a chain, strap, or rope (cause yes rope does have a rating...) by DOT REGULATIONS. You forgot to mention that in your 48k. What grade chains are you using and where are you anchoring these chains to?

Cause I use 70Grade, with a anchor point rating of 10k. So... if you do the math a 48k coil rates 5 chains. A horseshoe chain really... on a racked coil, a horseshoe chain is used on palleted items, when the pallet is secured to the item. Lol...

I would really like to see some pictures too. I am not in the habit of taking pictures of basic loads, so I do not have any of coils.

I think you are confusing a horseshoe with a trip.

Also, where you sit the single coil on the trailerbed?

I'll assume a flat is at the center. Is it the same with a step?

    Total length of trailer/2?

Do you even know what your talking about?

    A. List the DOT REGULATION that states you have to have a securement device over the top ..... I will wait ....... ....... .......

    B. My WEAKEAST anchor point is 6,600 ... You are REQUIRED to secure HALF the weight of the coil

EXAMPLE ..... 48k coil half is 24k ....6,600 WEAKEST POINT multiplied by 4 CHAINS is 26,400 .... 26,400 is greater than 24,000 therefore I have greater than HALF of the weight of the coil SECURED ... Therefore I am 100% legal unless you can point out the FMSCA regulation that says different

And unless you are carrying around 5/8 - 1/2 15lb ratchet binders your WEAKEST point, is not 10,000 its more like 9,200 or 7,700 .... Unless you pull a multi-axle sled

    ...... ...... ......still waiting

Single coils are set in the middle...this point is usually where your turn signal is on a flat spread axle....this gives you equal weight distrbution ... I try not to speak on subjects I have no knowledge of so I cant answer concerning a step
