From what I've seen, most tanker companies want at least a couple of years experience, but there are a few that will hire new drivers.
And tankers do sit every now and then, though we tend to get paid for that. One reason I prefer tanker work over van/reefer is that my pay isn't based only on mileage, so I don't have to necessarily keep the wheels turning in order to make any money.
Tanker pay

Are they paying overtime after 40, and depends on where you live.......local is pretty nice once you get use to it...........

I've been driving for 2 years now.Did 7 months with Werner on the DG account.working like a dog for little pay. Switched to a tanker co.and will never go back to a box. It is a different challeng getting used to the surge and slosh of a liquid load. You just take things a little slower with a tanker and I believe Rick G covered the basics pretty good about holding the brakes when you stop. Also take off a little slower to control the surge the best you can. You do get paid for a lot of things thatdry van makes you do for nothing. Most co.you get an hourly rate after the 1st hr.in a plant, and if you do a 34hr. restart on the road you get paid for that as well as breakdown pay and layover waithing for a load. Making more with a tanker than I did with a box.
diamondz and easy duz it Thank this. -
I've been on the DG account with USX for almost 7 years. As long as I keep taking students I can usually gross around 1400/week for around 80 hrs of my time. The local company starts at 17/hr. I'll get more details tomorrow but I don't think they pay overtime after 40. I didn't think that was legal but I'm no lawyer. I was told my work day would start at 7am an go until sometime in the evening. It's a big pay cut but I'd be sleeping in my own bed and putting my tanker and doubles endorsement to use. Lots to think about. Either way, my dollar store days are about done. It's either tanker or flatbed.
easy duz it Thanks this. -
So you're another trainer using students as cheap team drivers . You don't have any trouble getting fresh students with newbies quitting so often .

My previous statement didn't give you enough information to judge me, but I see it didn't stop you. I never have and never will team with my students. I teach them as much as they're interested in learning to be successful after they upgrade. I take advantage of the extra pay I get for training, and the ability to work a little longer in a day by keeping the student on break while I'm unloading the trailer in the morning. I can't and won't answer for the companies and trainers that use students as nothing more than cheap slaves, but just the fact that I'm a trainer doesn't automatically put me in the same category.easy duz it Thanks this.

Sorry but it is. Given away moons ago in the FLSA of 1933. Been challenged many times to no avail either. The law is often exploited by even the most prestigious private fleets when it suits them, hence my retirement / conversion to L/O.
Even cracked the books myself sometime ago and double checked it. Can't touch it unless congress repeals it. Once had a rookie congressman ( in conversation ) whom agreed to attach the repeal as pork to some other obscure bill however we agreed that the lobbyists clerks would catch it before it hit the floor...so we didn't try it...for now. I'm still searching for a way to get it to the floor but ahh, not likely.
Gonna have to find another way or some sort of attack on 2 fronts at the same time. They can't watch everything at once...so timing would be everything.
We're thinking of submitting the repeal say when there's several hot bills up AND several members are away AND burrying it as a line item in a long , obsucure bill say like daycare regulations but getting the sun and the moon to line up......robbak11 and MiFamilyGuy Thank this. -
Cheapest trucking that I have ever done is hauling milk. You can figure around 30cpm for the most part and then you sit around the dairies trying to get unloaded for hours without a penny pay. There ain't no way that I would even consider this line of driving if I was a young man. I believe that Indian River might pay around 32cpm but then you better kiss your loved one good=bye cause you are not coming home for awhile.

I took the job. 17/hr weather I'm driving or sitting. The first thing they're going to have me pull is water for swimming pools. They also have a couple milk accounts along with other farm products. I'll learn to pull doubles when grain season arrives. I'm looking forward to some new challenges.

This isn't convincing at all . If you are on duty loading and on duty training , when do you get hours to drive yourself with you and the student logging legally ?
