7 year old stepdeck can hide a lot of problems...weld cracks etc.

For another 12000 u can buy new with alum wheels.

Have any O/O's started with a load board n made contracts direct with shippers from there?

I'm totally on my own since august 2012. Love every minute of it. I started off with very seasonal produce around me, hauled that to NJ from August til end of Oct. and the 2 guys I was hauling for had plenty of loads back to my area from the ports. I should back up a bit - before I even started I called about 5 brokers I knew that were out there in my area and they said sure we will load you when you get your act together. When that produce came to an end I was lost for a while and decided I had to subscribe to the load board. After that it has been very smooth sailing. I am developing where I will run at what times of year. I have regular customers, none direct, and I intend to keep it that way as a 1 truck show. I am making good money right now and I don't have to hurry back to anywhere for the next load. However, I do have a plan if (or when) I have more trucks running for me and the direct customers I will go after. The seasonal produce I got approached to haul directly for him - but I told him no as I am not about to go bite the hand that feeds right off the bat. Hauling for the broker on those loads I made $200 less per load, however - I knew I was going to be paid. I can't afford to not be paid. I should also say I had a very good idea of what prices I can expect to haul for for a set of given lanes. I pull 2 axle reefer and enjoy doing it, I have no idea as to what rates should be like for flatbeds of any kind. That work does not interest me. Hope that helps.
