Why don't companies hire out of AK?

    So I have been looking around locally and searching online looking for a company that will hire and train me. I live in Juneau, AK I possess a CDL class B with air-brake and stick restrictions. I also hold a cdl class A permit that once done I will have every endorsement. It has been nothing more than a headache as I come to find little to no company hires out of AK. Even if I was too move to Anchorage, Haines, or Fairbanks where there are roads connecting to the lower 48's they still will not hire out of AK. I wonder why that is? Seeing as we are apart of the USA and can get down south. Also before it mentioned I have thought about going to the bigger cites of AK for my training but only to find out that the Union has major choke hold on the region. No offense to those that are in a union but I do not agree with the process that I hear and see up here. I will not get too deep into that as that is another discussion for another topic. Does anyone have the answer to this or know of a company that will hire out of AK?

    Companies like to go and hire where supply & demand are greatest.

    They need to have freight in and out to hire someone... concentrate on the carriers you see up there. They will be your best bet.

    I doubt any of the carriers who regularly operate between AK and the lower 48 will hire new drivers due to all the inherent circumstances involved.

    How would you ever get home in Juneau without a ferry boat or an aircraft? Unless a new road has been built, I was under the impression that area of Alaska is landlocked. And ang8488 is right, dead states are all over. I don't have quite as bad a problem, but many OTR companies wont hire from the Dakotas either.

    I would move if the company hired me. The issue with the companies here is the fact that they are not easy to work with at all. Because of the limited resources here they kind of control who can and cannot do anything here. In the bigger areas that are not land lock MrEd well the unions have those areas on a lock down and in a choke hold.

    well..if you're only choice is to join an union to get hired.. then thats what you'll have to do. or you can move down here where you have more options. btw...juneau is a besutiful city. been there early '80 in the coast guard

    Like it has been said your in a dead zone, I had the same problem when I drove over the road, a lot of company's wont hire out of NY, and even the ones that do hire only hire around the I-90 corridor.

    You may have to re-locate, even if temporarily, just long enough to be hired. Fairchild Freight and System Transport might hire you then. Fairchild Freight might be your best bet with steady runs to AK.

    These 2 companies don't have their own CDL school though.
