I noticed the article doesn't mention anything about a change in the documents required to properly file the I-9 form. I'm just wondering how long I'm going to be able to get by without having a passport or a certified copy of my birth certificate, which was destroyed in a house fire a year and a half ago.

Why don't you get a new birth certificate? I had to years ago. And you can't get a new passport without all the valid ID again, even if you go in and prove who you are and they have it on file that you have a valid passport?

I have the hospital copy of my birth certificate, but not the state copy.

Also, I don't live the county, or the state for that matter, I was born in.

I've never needed to provide anything more than my CDL and SS card, thus it has never been a priority of mine to replace the certified birth certificate. I never did have a passport.

You have to live in that state to get a copy of your birth certificate? Why? I'd get it so that, when I do need it, it's not delayed by more bureaucracy but, of course, that's up to yourself. :)

All I was trying to imply is that it would be a royal pain in the butt to get a copy of it via mail. The simplest way would be to just go to the courthouse in Livingston County, Illinois, show them my ID and walk out with a certified copy. However, that'd be about a $150 trip with gas prices what they are right now.

Aha!! I see. Well, if you're ever up that way, it'd be worth it but, unless you need it, yup, probably a royal PITA.

How did you verify who you were with them over the phone?

I recently had to order my birth certificate as well for the Michigan works program. I've never had any trouble proving who I am even in high immigration areas,Texas,California,Florida. I was surprised how easy it was to get birth records, especially using my girlfriends credit card?
